Here's some good news about the HD cookbook disc image, at
https://hdcookbook.dev.java.net . It's up and running on a
number of consumer players, including the PS/3. This came
about because we've figured out how to make a valid BD-RE disc
image -- the trick is to get rid of the AACS directory, and to
set some bits in the transport stream to false. See the
tools/cpistrip for how to strip out these TS bits.
Anyway, the point is that anyone should be able to make a BD-RE
disc image, using the assets and the code available at
https://hdcookbook.dev.java.net . This is the same menuing application
and game that are described in the HD cookbook (hdcookbook.com), but
there have been some bugfixes since the version on the book's DVD. With
the repository and the book, it should be possible to bootstrap
experimentation with BD-J on some real players!
We'll be posting more to the hdcookbook.dev.java.net open source
repository as we go -- stay tuned. And, if you have something you'd
like to share, please do join, and upload your stuff to the repository!
