Graham Hamilton recently wrote a blog entry about a change in the naming conventions for Java. He didn't turn on comments, so I'll oblige here.
I'm rather sanguine about name changes, especially when it removes the dreaded "enterprise" word, but what I really want from Sun is a rational version number. The same thing can be found in releases of Solaris. Why must something be simultaneously known as Java 1.5 and Java 5. This seems like an invitation for trouble.
Graham does mention the version number confusion, but mostly from a public impression standpoint. When I type "java -version" I expect to see 1.5.xx_xx formats that are familiar. Why are there two versions for every release of Java? I'll never know.
