Hi everyone,

We have a build of an Applet that will assist in the removal of older versions of the JRE. The Applet is available for testing on http://java.com/uninstall-tool . At this stage the Applet only targets the Windows platform, as it represents the largest installed base and the need for platform specific elements made Windows the logical starting point. We are deliberately not giving documentation on how to use the applet - we want feedback of the tool standing on its own.

The intent of making this build available is to gather feedback; ideas, suggestions, comments, good and bad, what works, what does not work, what could be improved, etc. Please try it out and give us feedback to ensure a smooth release.

  1. Try out the applet: http://java.com/uninstall-tool
  2. Let us know what you think: http://bugreport.sun.com/bugreport/contact.jsp
    • Provide details, please include:
      1. Nature of Feedback: 'Viewing or Running Applet'
      2. Applet or Application URL: 'java.com/uninstall-tool'
      3. Please include the JConsole output and OS info for investigation.
    Thank you,
    Roger Yeung

I appreciate the webtool you guys created, however, it would be nice to get a bit better support for business.

maybe a list of the msiexec product codes for previous versions or a tool that supports a silent and/or command version of the removal.

as of the security vulnerabilities announced for previous versions I would imagine a lot more people will be looking for info on how to quickly remove old versions and get java updates compliant in their environments

Just out of curiosity. Why are you building an uninstall plugin to uninstall java? Are you trying to remove older versions?

Yes. Prior to 6u10, we didn't have Patch-In-Place. Often times, people have multiple JREs installed on their machines. We are providing a tool to help users in removing old versions.
