Because major companies like Sun, Microsoft and Google have repeatedly dumped Desktop development tools. No one enjoys working with APIs that are no longer supported. Web development enjoys better tooling, so developers flock to it.

Because they are not "cool" or run on "phones".

Not really of couse, our JWS desktop replacement app is a very cool GIS telecom tool, and it is "mobile". But - you can't buy it for 99 cents and it basicaly exists for one reason - do help people work. And work is not something most people want to read about.
