I need to uniquely identify a device and register it in a server.. so I though on the IMEI..
Can somebody tell me if it is possible to retrieve the IMEI or any unique identifier from a cellphone device...?

Sorry, it is not possible in general case. Some phones can report IMEI
via System.getProperty(), but it is vendor-specific thing, and as far
as I remember, is restricted on those devices to signed midlets.
google "imei j2me getProperty" for more info:

I think the better approach is to assigned id (like sessionid) on
server side and store it in app RMS. Server will take responsibility
to assign ids uniquely.

But if you want to implement some kind of 'copy-protection', then it
won't do for you.
