Java3D + Applet Not Hiding

I'm building an applet that uses Java3D. The issue I'm having is that when I have the applet open and I change tabs, the portion that uses Java3D does not "hide". That is, it's displayed overtop what should be displayed on the page.

Has anyone encountered this? It's also happening on the demos that I've found online.

One solution that I've tried is to use FocusListener to try to figure out when the tab changes and hide the panel holding the Java3D manually using setVisible(false), but it's not perfect.

Thanks in advance,
