[JAI-IMAGEIO] dark areas turn blue with Mosaic Operator

I am having an issue with the Mosaic Operator.
I use it to put together several images that do not overlap, with a
border between them.
Images are standard jpeg that I load into bufferedimages, then get them
translated to the to the correct (x,y)
There is no ROI involved since I use full images.
I thought it would be pretty straightforward and it works fine when
specifying no background or a black/dark background.

But when I choose a white/light background, I see that the darker parts
of the pictures turn blue.
This happen with both MOSAIC_TYPE_OVERLAY and MOSAIC_TYPE_BLEND.
I tried drawing only 1 image with no translation done on it, problem
still there.
anyone has an idea what may be going on?
thanks in advance
AG

set the mosaic threshold to 0, if that does not work, we need to
fiddle with roi.
