I have just posted the following message on the blog:

Good News and Bad News
http://blogs.sun.com/wonderland/entry/good_news_and_bad_news

I know everyone likes to get the bad news over with first, so I'll start with that. We found out on Friday that development resources are no longer being applied to Project Wonderland.

The good news is that those of us who have worked so hard to bring this project to life still wholeheartedly believe in it. A core group of the Wonderland team intends to keep the project going. We will be pursuing both for-profit and not-for-profit options that will allow us to become a self-sustaining organization. Having anticipated this possible outcome, we already have some promising irons in the fire.

As a first step in this next phase of the project, we will be releasing a Wonderland v0.5 Preview 3 release early next week.

There is so much great momentum behind Wonderland. To our knowledge, there are currently three companies offering Wonderland-related products, and eight companies offering Wonderland world-building services. There are countless exciting university projects and a number of corporations that have seen the advantages of Wonderland over other platforms. We are seeing new people posting on the forums almost every day.

Any concrete help you can give us would, of course, be welcome, but what we are asking for now is your moral support and your continued participation in our thriving community. Let's stand together in our determination to keep this project moving forward.

If you would like to contact me privately, please feel free to do so at nicoley @ dev.java.net.

Nicole.

Sorry to hear that ya'll will be dividing your attention. But hopefully things will still move along and the Community will get more involved with the day-to-day firefighting and development stuff and not just the use stuff.

Hip Hip Hooray for Nicole and her band of merry elves!

The outpouring of support for the project has been extremely motivating. Thank you Dick and Ivan and everyone else who has posted comments on the blog or written to me personally. We've been working the phones and our networks all day today. Seeing these messages is helping to keep everyone's spirits high.

I couldn't imagine a better community than this one!

Nicole,

I fully go with Dick, Ivan and Maggie's feedback.
Wonderland has become part of our dream and future - the show must go on!
And it is unique: e.g. no other open source VW platform can offer spatial voice and shared inworld apps today-- you know that.

Don't hesitate to suggest a more active contribution from the community- some of us are just waiting for that (personally I'll continue French L10N and overall testing, but maybe could do more).

Cheers,
-michel

Nicole and entire Project Wonderland team:

Needless to say, we (as well as everyone who posts to this Forum, and doubtless many more who don't) are very saddened to hear that you folks will no longer be receiving support from Sun / Oracle. That's really a shame, and shortsighted if you ask me. This is such a great project with so much potential, but of course it needs further nurturing in order to achieve full realization! Our sincere condolences and sympathy!

That's regarding the bad news. Regarding the good news:

> those of us who have worked so hard to bring this project to life still wholeheartedly believe in it. A core group of the Wonderland team intends to keep the project going. We will be pursuing both for-profit and not-for-profit options that will allow us to become a self-sustaining organization. Having anticipated this possible outcome, we already have some promising irons in the fire.

That's great to hear! We sure hope you can work something out!

Hear, hear! Unfortunately, neither I personally nor my company are in a position right now to provide the concrete help you most require :-( but chalk us down for the moral support, encouragement not to lose faith, and continued participation in the WL community! We sure hope the project can continue to move forward, because it is our dream to use Wonderland to create a truly viable 21st century corporate space in which, ultimately, very many of the collaborative engineering efforts of our geographically distributed organization can be conducted: streamlining our work, tightening our corporate integration, and enhancing our bottom line. (Potential sponsors, listen up! We believe in these benefits!) We understand that it will take more time and effort to bring Wonderland to a point where it is capable of supporting such a vision, but we're willing to grow up with it and assist the process in whatever ways we're able.

So, please hang in there! Best wishes for your efforts to establish a new context for the next phase of Project Wonderland, reborn! We will be watching these developments with keen interest -- please do keep us posted!

Great good luck to you! :-)

Sincerely,
