Hi, I'm wondering now that the Oracle thing is complete; is there any information regarding how PhoneME will differ after the transition? Can an Oracle person comment?
I am not an Oracle person, but Terrence's blog contains an interesting entry about
Oracle's commitment to Java, open source and the developer community:
"Unification of Java ME and Java SE APIs and capabilities"
So what does that mean for phoneME / Java ME?
I assume since the CDC route is more close to existing Java SE API, that is the intent, but was curious if anyone else had some hypotheses.
I was think with openJDK and the modularity work, it seems they could develop a profile with only the necessary modules needed for a modular device, but not really sure.
I seem to recall there was another project (the name escapes me) with a VM which was targeting display less devices like those associated with the SunSpots. Is this another approach?
Old reference that I think might be of interest on this ( http://forums.java.net/jive/message.jspa?messageID=328946 ).
Thanks for your responses davyp and ebresie. Yeah I guess I'd like some kind of road map or statement specifically regarding pmea from an Oracle representative. It seems like there is still activity in the svn repo, which is a good sign:
Despite some rough edges, openjdk (icedtea) is buildable for ARM but it's monolithic nature makes it unsuitable for many smaller devices.
There is not much going in the svn repository these days. The build you are referring
to is just a new development branch created weekly based on the current code in
trunk with an update of the CVM_BUILD_ID flag. Compared to last week this is the
There may have been some minor changes in cdc during the last month, but in
pcsl, cldc and midp for example, the latest changes were of a couple of months
ago. Terrence told me a while back that the engineers were hard at work on JavaFX
Mobile, the commercial Java ME stack, and MIDP 3. I am not sure if we are going to
see some of it back into the phoneME project. It would indeed be nice if somebody
from Oracle could comment on how the phoneME project will continue.
