problem installing imageio-ext-3 on 64bit linux

I'm trying to install this on Centos 5.3 64 bit, and I'm running into a problem at:
3.7.2.1 Kakadu configuration option
Add --with-kakadu=KAKADU_FOLDER option to the ./configure command, where
KAKADU_FOLDER represents the path where your Kakadu library is located.

If I use the kakadu install directory, it fails and says to recompile with the fPIC option, but I've uncommented that option in all the previous steps.

If I use the directory "mylibs" described at the start, it fails to find the include files.

The standalone plugin would be far better for us. Where would I find that?

Thanks,
John

John,
it is available in the imageio-ext project, at the document and files
section.
More precisely, is it contained in the imageio-ext 1.0.3 libraries archive
available at [1].

You will find the imageio-ext-kakadu-1.0.3 jar on it. Add this on your
classpath as well as the required dependencies (imageio-ext-customstreams,
imageio-ext-imagereadmt, imageio-ext-utilities), the jni.jar and be sure
your LD_LIBRARY_PATH contains a reference to your kakadu SOs.

Let me know.
Regards,
Daniele

Daniele & Simone,

Thanks for your help, that was dead easy to set up and so far appears to be working perfectly. We've tested it on both windows and Centos, and will integrate it with the rest of our code over the next couple of days.

cheers,

John

Hi,
for problems on imageio-ext I suggest to post your questions to the
imageio-ext mailing list instead of the jai one.

Which version of kakadu are you using? When specifying the KAKADU_FOLDER are
you referring to the vX.X.X-NNNN folder?
Anyway, we haven't found some free time yet to setup a 64 bit Centos
machine. We know some user are working with that OS.
Do you have any chance to try with a newer version of Kakadu (6.x)? (It has
better support and specific makefiles for 64 bit)

Let me know.
Regards,
Daniele

We are using kakadu v5_2_6-00693N, and yes I'm using the v5_2_6-00693N when specifying the KAKADU_FOLDER.

We don't have the Kakadu 6 version, but if that's a better way to go we will get it.

John,
Kakadu 6 may help you when building 64 bit binaries.

Anyway, if you are interested in accessing data via Kakadu, you can use the
standalone imageio-ext-kakadu plugin (Which is not dependending/related on
gdal) which have been released with imageio-ext 1.0.3.

Let me know.

Daniele

Ciao John,
as Daniele pointed out, I'd would recommend you to evaluate the
imageio-ext kakadu plugin whicih directly reads and write jpeg2k
images via kakadu, this way you would isolate yourself from building
gdal and kakadu. Notice however that there is a bug in JNI bindings
for kakadu when handling 16 bits signed data which we have fixed, so
if you have problems with this type of data, let us know.

Regards,
Simone.
