Multicast is at the physical network layer.
Propagated pipes are a software implementaion of a pipe that can forward to muliple destinations in a broadcast fashion. i.e. All JXTA peers listening on the pipe ID that the propagated pipe is publishing on will recieve.

The implemenation in JXTA for Propagated pipes uses Multicast if availble, however if not or orintance behid a fire wall will emulate. And will also use other peers to distribute in a hub/spoke type fashion to resuce the load on the sender.

Yes it does

However there is an issue in peergroups using relays other than net peergroup for propagated pipes. Therefore, if you require to use in peer groups keep in touch as planning to try to resolve/understand in the comming weeks.

We are currently using reliablily in net peer group.
