Android implementation

Hello,

I have attempted to write an Android implementation and have uploaded the sources to the incubator at:
https://lwuit-incubator.dev.java.net/source/browse/lwuit-incubator/trunk...

The implementation is at a very early stage and I would love it if you help to shape it. Check the readme file for details on the implementation and it's usage.

Maybe one note in advance: This is not an Android forum and generic Android related issues (that is non-LWUIT and unrelated to this implementation) should probably be posted somewhere else.

Regards,
Thorsten.

Hello! I get sources of Android implementation from https://svn.java.net/svn/lwuit-incubator~svn/ and i get latest version of LWUIT souces from https://svn.java.net/svn/lwuit~svn. AndroidImplementation class have reference for class com.sun.lwuit.PeerComponent, but this class is absent in LWUIT sources.

It works fine on the emulator, but can't get to first base on the actual device. The "clicks" don't seem to register. The Ok button did not work. I escaped (back key) to get to the menu list. Selection doesn't work. I managed to get File System working once, to get to Mobile and FTP. But that was it. Couldn't get there again. Also the trackball does not work. The Enter key on the keyboard does not work either for selection.

And of course it doesn't look like an Android app - which is okay since it probably looks like an LWUIT app.

Many thanks os2baba,
I did a few changes to hopefully get the trackball working on the real device but I am only guessing here. I will probably post a small app to easily see if we loose input events somewhere. Thank's again for your help.
Cheers,
Thorsten.

Hi thortsten.

Since my internship is ending in a week, I am done developping on J2ME environnement, and I'm working on porting our application on Android.

I just get my hands on a G1 phone, so I finally been able to test your implementation.

First of all, great job. It do runs the LWUIT Demo without any problem. It needs a bit of change to call the AssetManager to access the .res file and exclude all M3G/3D components.

What I saw:
- The trackball works great.
- Bitmap fonts too.
- Performance are a HUGE issue. I didn't port our application on LWUIT/Android yet, but I guess it'll be really slow (I need to wrap some call to RMS/Connector/etc before launching it on G1).

Anyways congrats thorsten, you did a great job !

Yes, performance seems to be low from what I hear. Maybe you find a way to improve things. Anyway, thank you very much for your feedback Jérémy.

Hi thorsten,

I tried only briefly the LWUIT Demo to run and it worked ok. However I
don't know the eye-candy & performance factor of running apps on an
additional layer. Right now I am focussing on the J2ME and iPhone
platform, already ton of work I rarely sleep ;)

Something OT: Anybody knows what Suns strategy with javafx for mobile
is? I was at a event where terrence barr supposed to speak about it,
unfortunately he got stuck in a train incident so no first hand
information on that.

Subject: Re: Android implementation

I was hoping for a little more people that would try to get LWUIT
running on the Android platform :)

Anyway, for testing I have build my FTP client on top of the Android
implementation. It is running in the emulator but I lack the real
device to test it. Any LWUIT user out there that would be willing to
test this to see if and how it behaves?

Hi thorsten_s
I ve run your android impl with my app on a HTC wildfire (android froyo)
No issues and performances are very good dispite HTC wildfire is low level android model.
Very good job
PS:Have we a chance the android implementation to handle multimedia components :
take photo, take/view video,and listen/record sound ?
