Hi All,
I am trying to use Apache 2.2 web server as a http load balancer for the glassfish server. I followed the steps from the following link http://blogs.sun.com/kshitiz/entry/load_balancer_plugin_in_glassfish .

But I strucked with the following error.

when i am starting Apache with the following command:

C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\bin>httpd.exe -k start
httpd.exe: Syntax error on line 496 of C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load C:/
Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/modules/mod_loadbalancer.dll into server: The specified module could not be found.

added the following lines to the end of Httpd.conf file.

##BEGIN EE LB Plugin Parameters
#LoadFile /usr/lib/libCstd.so.1 (THIS LINE IS ONLY NEEDED ON SOLARIS SPARC)
LoadModule loadbalancer_module modules/mod_loadbalancer.dll
#AddModule apachelbplugin_module

config-file conf/loadbalancer.xml
locale en

##END EE LB Plugin Parameters

My environment:
OS : windows
Application Server : Glassfish V.2
http web server : Apache 2.2

I have not configured the LD_LIBRARY_PATH path, where can update library path in windows.
I am not using SSL.

If you have any documents specific to windows operating system, glassfish application server configuration steps and required configuration files please update me, that will be great help for me.

or any other way to solve this issue.

Thanks and Regards,
Balaji Varaprasad.G

Please modify appended lines in httpd.conf as follows:

##BEGIN EE LB Plugin Parameters
LoadModule apachelbplugin_module modules/mod_loadbalancer.dll
#AddModule mod_apache2lbplugin.cpp

config-file "C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\conf\loadbalancer.xml"
locale en

DocumentRoot "C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\htdocs"
ServerName HDBLOMXSSP2916.HCLT.CORP.HCL.IN

##END EE LB Plugin Parameters

Thanks,

Hi Balaji,

Can you provide more details on this? Is it not forwarding your request
to back-end instances?

Please share your loadbalancer xml and also noticed behavior when you
access an url.

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi Balaji,

Which applications have you configured in loadbalancer xml?

Suppose your loadbalancer.xml contains below entry :
enabled="true"/>

Now when you access http://localhost:8080/clusterjsp, then load-balancer
will forward this request to back-end application server instances.

Hope this helps,
Kshitiz

Hi Saxena,
Thanks a lot Saxena, but when i am browsing http://localhost:8080/clusterjsp always it is pointing to one machine only, even though i declared 2 instnce in a cluster and menstioned in loadbalancer.xml.

why this is happnening.

where i have to change these properties.

Actually other machine having 2 instance one is own machine and another instance is in my machine.
but apache load balancer is configured in my machine with other machine cluster configuration, but always my machie is responding why this is happening .

Thanks and Regards,
Balaji Varaprasad.G

Kshitiz Saxena

Hi,

I will quote messages from other thread to provide clear understanding

I wrote :
"clusterjsp sample creates a session and when session is created all
subsequent requests are serviced by same back-end instance. There is
option to invalidate session in clusterjsp sample. Please use that to
see load-distribution."

Pankaj inputs:
"HTTP Load Balancer provides sticky load balancing. Thus from a client
session, first initial request followed by subsequent requests would get
serviced from the same instance which serviced the first request. Also
note clusterjsp application renders information on server and port which
serviced the request.

You should open a newer client session, say using another web brower :
IE and Firefox when dispatching requests from same m/c or close and
start the browser again (in case you do not have more than one browser
application). You can even test the distribution by dispatching the
request from another m/c. "

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi Saxena,
may be i did some thing wrong in httpd.conf file, but i am unable to recognize the problem. why i am saying is, i saved some session data from one browser and i stoped that instance. then i tried to save another data from the same brownser it is showing server busy / server may be temporarily un available. why this is happening .
but i configured for the 2 instances in loadbalancer.xml file.

Thanks and Regards,

Thanks And Regards,
Balaji Varaprasad.G

# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum number of requests a server process serves

ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild 0

Hi Saxena,
i changed ThreadsPerChild 250 as ThreadsPerChild 1 but no good luck. still having same issue,

my loadbalancer.xml

but i stoped first one, started second one. but it is responding as server not available.
if i commented first one then it is responding with second instance.

Thanks and regards,
Balaji Varaprasad.G

Hi Jairath,
for all mod_loadbalancer.dll loadependency walker showing errors even though the respected dll files are kept in "path" environment variable, where can i get and place these dll to work this mod_loadbalancer.dll smoothly.
if i placed the respective dll files in sys32 directory it's working fine with warnings but still having issues in windows.

please let me know, is it Apache suitable for glassfish in windows platform or i have to go for other webservers that work with glassfish in windows platform.

Thanks and Regards,
Balaji Varaprasad.G

You might want to look into using Apache's "native" loadbalancer
with GlassFish, see

http://blogs.sun.com/jluehe/entry/supporting_apache_loadbalancer_with_gl...

for more info.

Hi all,

I am also getting the same problem. I am unable to start the apache server......

Kshitiz Saxena

Hi Balaji,

In windows, you need to add plugin path to system environment variable
"path". You need to restart system for this setting to take effect.

Hope this helps,
Kshitiz

Hi Saxena,
i appended windows environmental variable "path" to plug in lib directory,
and restarted my system, still getting
Syntax error on line 496 of C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load C:/
> Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/modules/mod_loadbalancer.dll into server: The specified module could not be found.

the same problem.

Kshitiz Saxena

Hi Balaji,

Please check whether you have provided read/execute permission to user
on plugin file as well as parent directories.

Sometimes having spaces can cause problem. Add it in abbreviated form,
as an example "Program Files" should be "Prog~1"

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi Saxena,
sorry for the interruption where can i change read/write permissions to the plugin in windows.
is there any command to achive read/write permissions on this plugin or in apache command available for windows platform.

i am not specifying complete path. if we specify the path "/" then apache by default it will take from apache installation home directory (C:/).
even though i tried with the complete path with " C:/
Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/modules/mod_loadbalancer.dll"
but no change in results.

Kshitiz Saxena

Hi,

Right click on the folder/file. Then click on "Properties". All
permissions are under "Security" tab.

You should add complete path in environment variable, i.e., "C:\Program
Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\modules". Since it has spaces
in directory names, it is better to add it as
"C:\PROGRA~1****\APACHE~1\Apache2.2\modules"

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi

Even i have installed in Apache2.2 in c:\ for avoiding spaces.

path in environment variable is

C:\Apache2.2\modules;D:\Clustering\Clustering\aslb-9.1-MS4-b7\lib;

still its not finding "C:\Apache2.2\modules\mod_loadbalancer.so" to load while starting the apache server.

Please help me

Pankaj Jairath

Need to verify that all the dependent DLLs are found while OS tries to
load mod_loadbalancer.dll. Please download dll dependency viewer tool
from - http://dependencywalker.com/ and open the mod_loadbalancer.dll
and let me know the result is publishes.

Also is your system a 32bit or 64bit Win installation ?

regards
Pankaj

Hi Jairath,
when i try to open mod_loadbalancer.dll through dependency walker , i am getting errors.

please look into the attached scree shot.

where can i get the dependency dll's.

mine is 32 bit Win installation.

Thanks and Regards,
Balaji varaprasad.G

Hi,

Apache 2.2 is not supported on windows. I had not mentioned that as
supported platform in my blog. Now I have highlighted that windows is
not a supported platform.

The binary available on windows is only for Apache2.0.x. In case you
want to use windows platform, then please use Apache2.0.x.

Sorry for all the confusion.

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi Saxena,
i installed apache_2.0.63-win32-x86-no_ssl, but there is no directory named conf/extra in apache installation home directory. where can i find httpd-mpm.conf,httpd-vhosts.conf and update the same.

Your instructions are here:
Change
FROM:
#Include conf/extra/httpd-mpm.conf
TO:
Include conf/extra/httpd-mpm.conf

Change
FROM:
#Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf
TO:
Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf

Kshitiz Saxena

Hi,

You can use latest plugin for that purpose, i.e., aslb-9.1.1-b6.jar.
Please follow the instructions available @
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-3679/abdhg?l=en&a=view for Apache
2.0.x.

My blog is specifically for Apache2.2.

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi Balaji,

It is good to know that you went past previous issue and Apache is
starting up.

This error reported in logs is specifically when loadbalancer xml is
either not available or not readable. Please change permission of the
file and parent directory to all permissions for all users.

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi,

Please share your httpd.conf and directory listing of
\conf directory.

You can also try adding \conf in the path and use only
"loadbalancer.xml" as "config-file" in httpd.conf

Thanks,
Kshitiz

Hi,

I am able to reproduce the issue. I am looking into it. Will keep you
updated.

Meanwhile if you can, please try on linux/solaris platform.

Thanks,
Kshitiz
