Update on M3DD 2009 remote participation

All,

As like last year we also plan to do a live broadcast of the entire M3DD
conference on the web, for free.

Last year some folks criticized the use of proprietary video formats and
playback mechanisms - and we agree. We'd love to use open formats and Java.

However, after a bunch of research it appears our options are limited. See
my write-up on the M3DD wiki:

http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Mobileandembedded/DeveloperDays

In summary, it looks like we'll stick with the ustream solution for another
year - unless someone pulls an unexpected alternative our of their pocket.

Feel free to provide feedback or suggestions here on the alias. We are
definitely open to input.

See you in person or online on the 21st/22nd!

Best,

-- Terrence

Hi,

How about something like Caltech's EVO system (evo.vrvs.org)? They
broadcast the startup of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) over that to
loads of people.

Just a suggestion, but I personally think UStream was alright last
year, so am happy to use it again.

Regards,
-David

David,

Hmm, I remember someone mentioning it to me. I'll have another look - thanks.

David,

I looked into EVO. Feature-wise it looks very good. However,
they limit the audience (or at least the creation of new
communities) to the physics/science community - since it is
funded by government money.

Another potential option is dimdim.com. Unfortunately, they
don't offer non-commercial licenses. It's free up to 20
participants but gets expensive beyond that.

So for now ustream still looks like the best option.
