Hello.

Forgive my ignorance, but: what's wrong with using the Windows Mobile 2003 version of phoneME on a WM5/6 pocket pc?

If we test all the functionalities of our application and everything works fine, and the Windows Mobile 5 version of phoneME has issues, why shouldn't we use the Windows Mobile 2003 version of phoneME for WM5/6?

Thanks,
Lucas

Hi Lucas,

I try to compile the WM2003 and WM5 builds from the same source code. Up to
now you can use the WM2003 build on WM5, but only because I already have
tests in the WM2003 build that check on which WinCE version the VM is running
so that it also runs as expected on WM5 and higher. If Windows Mobile would
be backwards compatible then for sure you could use the WM2003 builds
anywhere. Sadly enough this is not the case. Some APIs do not work anymore on
newer versions on the OS (although the code compiles just fine). The menu
concept is just one example that has changed a few times. Also, some people
told me that the WM5 build compiled with VS2005 did not run on their WM6
device, whereas the WM2003 (eVC4) did. Perhaps for other people, it is the
other way around.

So my advice: pick a build that works, and if neither works, send a bug
report.

Best regards,
Davy
