I need to read in a nitf and covert it to a jpeg. I was looking at the imageio-ext page but I am having a difficult time figuring how I either get or build the library(ies) that I need. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
actually, there isn't a stable released version yet. Hence, as a preliminar
step, you can get the imageio-ext library from the imageio-ext svn
(Instructions are available at:
https://imageio-ext.dev.java.net/source/browse/imageio-ext/).

In the meantime, you can take a look on the available guide:
PDF: http://www.geo-solutions.it/doc/ImageioExt-SetupGuide.pdf
OpenOffice: http://www.geo-solutions.it/doc/ImageioExt-SetupGuide.odt

This guide provides a wide set of instructions on how to setup all the
libraries/tools needed to allow the Imageio-ext library working.
This also includes instructions on how to setup a custom GDAL build (windows
DLLs / Linux SOs).
However, since you need to work on a basic GDAL driver (NITF) you can simply
leverage on the pre-built dynamic libraries, which are available via the
deploy module of the imageio-ext project. (More info are available within
the guide, at the "libraries deployment instructions" section).
In such a context, supposing you are working on Windows, you can read the
SetupGuide chapters: From 2 to 2.5 (included). Then, jump to 2.9.
Otherwise, if you are working on Linux, you can read only chapters: From 3
to 3.5 (included). Then, jump to 3.8
[Excluded Chapters "2.6 -> 2.8 and 3.6 -> 3.7" explain how to configure and
build a custom GDAL version. Therefore you can skip them]

After this, you should be ready to use the imageio-ext library. You can take
a look on the UserGuide (although it is on a early version) available at:
OpenOffice: http://www.geo-solutions.it/doc/ImageioExt-UserGuide.odt
PDF:http://www.geo-solutions.it/doc/ImageioExt-UserGuide.pdf

It provides examples for project configurations and use.

Anyway, in case of troubles, you can post your questions on the Imageio-ext
mailing list.
(See https://imageio-ext.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectMailingListList)

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Daniele Romagnoli
