How to get the Feather Effect?

Hi everyone:
How to add "Feather" effect to a image (or actually: the image border).
You can see the effect when using Photoshop, or following this url:

A hack off the top of my head would be:

1. create 4 rectangle strips, along each edge of your image. thickness defines amount of feathering.
2. create 4 linear gradients (hue does not matter, alpha channel shifts from transparent to opaque), 1 gradient for each rectangle strip.
3. change the composite mode to DST_OUT.
4. fill the rectangles in the image with the gradients such that the gradients are transparent near the center of the image, and opaque at the edges of the image.

I imagine the corners won't turn out right where the rectangle strips overlap.
