Hi.
Having problems downloading games I have made to my Samsung. It is compatible with Cldc 1.1 and midp 2.0 and so are my games. When I am about to download it to the phone there is a error message and the download is stopped. When I try to download to my Sony Ericsson it works fine. Anyone knows if I have to adjust it in any way to different phones.

Hi Micke

I was in trouble too because it was difficult to install a JAR-File on my Samsung.

I found this service Code:

*#9998*4678255#

This code unlocks the Java installer. Enter it like a phone number.

At the very moment, I don't remember the source of this information. Nevertheless, I asked Samsung what they think about this service code. The answer was:

"Thank you for your email to Samsung Fun Club UK regarding Java applications.
Unfortunately we have to advise you that we can only support information on our handsets and would prefer not to comment on this code that you have obtained.
We hope this is helpful and look forward to hearing from you again via ..." :-D

Maybe this service code can help you.

micke1977,

You might want to update your jad file changing the property value from
MIDlet-Jar-URL: GameEngine.jar

to
MIDlet-Jar-URL: http://www.vftos.com/download/test/GameEngine.jar

I've only found some phones that fetch the jar file from the same location they grabbed the jad when you only give the name of the jar file. While this doesn't require signing, it should get you to the point where you can OTA your app to a phone for testing.

Thanks for helping. I belive there is nothing wrong with the jad file. I have published my jar and jad file on www.vftos.com/download/test/GameEngine.jad and www.vftos.com/download/test/GameEngine.jar . The game is not signed, what means with signed and how do I sign the game? Regards Micke

Signing a MIDlet in a way that is recognized by many different devices is tricky. First, see if the particular phone you are having trouble with allows you to select a setting like "Accept unsigned applications for installation" or something similar - and then try installing again.

"Error while installing" is the error message when I tried to install using .jad file. If I try to use the .jar file directly "unsupported content type"

The installer won't recognize the jar file directly so you need to install via the jad file.

Some installers are more strict than others when it comes to accepting the jad files as valid. Typical problems are that the MIDP and CLDC version properties are incorrect, the MIDlet name is missing, or the MIDlet URL is wrong. Also, you need to make sure that the jar size defined in the jad matches the actual jar size. Finally, you may need to allow the installer to accept unsigned MIDlets (assuming your MIDlet is unsigned).

What's the error message?

Generally, the download itself should always complete unless there are issues with the wireless connection. Once the jar file has downloaded the installer will check to see if the attributes, size, and signatures are correct - that's when errors and differences between devices can occur.
