Determining whether connected to Internet

This is probably a dumb question... I have an application which uses
JavaHelp for its help facility - this is the only part of it that accesses
the Internet. Recently, my connection was down, and my app just hung.
After reconnecting to the Internet, everything ran OK. I would like to
improve the human factors (assuming I'm right) by putting out a message
saying something like "Connection to Internet lost - click on Yes if you
want to proceed without help facility". TIA

In case anyone else has this problem, this just to let them know that I
decided to do a connect on a URLConnection to my help pages - it seems to
work! Maybe there was a cleaner way, but this will do for now!

Without knowing where it was hanging that might be difficult to
determine. I'm surprised at the lack of any error as it should be trying
to establish a connection via URL and that should fail.
