How can I load a progressive JPEG file into a scene graph, progressively?

I'm developing an applet which uses a large image as a background for the scene. This background will change as the user navigates. Rather than making the user wait until the new background image has completely loaded, I'd like to use a progressive JPEG, and have the image node render it progressively as it arrives. Is there a way to do that?

Regards,

Pete

There's no out-of-the-box solution afaik.

But you can experiment with http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/javax/imageio/ImageReader.html - maybe you get the single progressive images out of the stream.

Then you could wrap each of them into a scenegraph node and display/replace them as they occur.
