"physical" ground plane

What constitutes the ground plane that avatars physically walk on - the thing that stops them plummeting to infinity as it were ? This relates to my attempts to create a building, currently I have a floor in my model and I'm simply setting it's origin in world so that it looks right and the avatar isn't impeded by it but I can't help thinking I'm missing a piece of the puzzle here, because my floor clearly isn't serving a physical function.

Once you add geometry representing the floor the avatar will stand on it. To avoid the avatar falling into the abyss there is a hard coded limit at (I think) -0.5
