What are the rules for when an updated jar is picked up by the new plugin? We have an applet using the jnlp syntax for deployment that when we update the jar on the webserver and hit reload on the page we don't get the new jar. We have to restart the browser to load the updated applet.

That sounds like a browser issue. Most browsers will not automatically check for a new jar on a simple reload caused by revisiting the page during the same browser session.

I've always had to force a reload by using a meta key + reload button. I forget which key will force which browser to reload the entire page instead of reloading from cache but if you look at the docs for the browser you are using you should be able to find the right key combo...

You probably need to hit "x" in the Java Console to flush the in-memory cache.
