Hi forum

I noticed a strange thing with build 22. When you choose "About Java Technology" from the tray to verify the current version, the window doesn't show as the front window - I had to close several other open windows before being able to see it. AFAIK earlier betas didnt have this issue.

Thanks
Jacob

Edit: title changed, since problem still reproduces in 6u12-b02.

The link works fine.

But unfortunately, this bug 6632182 is not fixed completely in 6u12-b02. I can still reproduce this issue, I originally reported in this thread, by doing the following.

1. Open Internet Explorer and launch my applet.
2. Switch to Firefox - or any other program for that matter.
3. Right click on the Java tray icon and choose "About Java Technology". The window still gets hidden behind other windows as previously descibed.

If - and only if - Internet Explorer has focus, the dialog is shown correctly. The correct behaviour must be, that the window is shown regardless of Internet Explorer having focus or not. It used to work correctly in any JRE before 6u10.

Please fix this for 6u12 FCS.

Thanks in advance,
Jacob

It seems work just fine on Vista for us. Please make sure you download 6u12 latest build on java.net.

I can still reproduce this very easily with the latest 6u12-b03. Done on Windows Vista x64. Start with no windows open.

1. Launch Firefox.
2. Launch Internet Explorer.
3. Open the URL http://testkirkeportal.brandsoft.dk/forms/frmservlet?config=TESTBSK in Internet Explorer. Wait for the applet window to load.
4. Switch to the Firefox window.
5. Right-click on the Java tray icon and choose "About Java Technology". The dialog is not shown as should be, but is hidden behind the Firefox window.

Tested on 2 different Vista systems. Its probably important, that this applet opens an additional Frame. Please try this procedure and post the result.

Thanks in advance,
Jacob

EDIT: I think I have nailed down the cause of this issue. This issue only occurs, if you use the multi-monitor managing software Ultramon. You can work around this issue by adding an exception to java.exe in this program's compatibility options. If I turn Ultramon completely off, the issue doesn't happen neither.

Since I have now found the cause and a workaround, I'll leave it up to you, if you want to chase this further, as it involves a third-party product.

Jacob,

I could not reproduce the issue. Could you please provide more info about how to reproduce your case?

Thanks,
Roger Y.

Sure

I have several other apps open, including Firefox, Windows Explorer, and misc. development tools. None of these windows are minimized. OS is Windows XP.

I now use Internet Explorer to start an applet, which in turn opens another JFrame. This causes the Java system tray icon to appear as expected. I now switch to *one of the other applications* like Firefox - I forgot to specify this, sorry - as this seems to be the critical part.It doesn't happen with the applet's frame having focus.

Now, *with Firefox as the active window*, I right click the system tray icon and choose "About Java technology". The about-box window opens, but appears to be hidden under the Firefox window. I can alt-tab to bring the window in focus, but IMO this window should always have focus no matter if the applet has focus or not.

Hope you can reproduce the issue with this information.

Thanks,
Jacob

Just tested build 23, and problem isn't fixed. I'll change the title of the post.

This issue is still not fixed in the build 27 Release Candidate. Do you plan to have it fixed for the final release or?

This bug is not in the list to be fixed for 6u10. It will be addressed in next JDK release.

I believe we now have the "next JDK release", and this problem is still present in 1.6.0_11. It doesn't just happen for the "About Java Technology" window, but also for various other popup windows. Any scheduled release for a fix?

Edit: looks like a duplicate bug 6632182 was logged, and it will be fixed in 1.6.0_12. Is it too early to estimate a release date for this version? Could we hope for January?

That's good to hear.

I'd like to test this 6u12-b02 version, but I'm not sure where on java.net I will be able to download it, since the old 6u10 prerelease page is taken down now. Can I make you post a link once it's available for download?

An announcement will be posted on the SDN Program News (http://blogs.sun.com/SDNProgramNews ). You may want to subscribe the RSS feed for the latest news (see the 6 Update N category in the right nav menu).

This is getting crazy. YOUR LINK IS BROKEN!!!

Early access just points to 6u11 which is also broken.

See:

http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=54567&tstart=0

Right now, 6u10 is the only usable Java release.
