the current way to handle backwards incompatible applets is pretty ugly (see attachment).
(I really hope this is not final)

Are install banners like in silverlight planed?

It seems like they are able to place custom (website specific) text around the image.

That isn't part of the Java Plug-In. It's an example applet I wrote to illustrate how one might encourage users to upgrade. The source code is linked from the new plug-in's documentation. Feel free to suggest something better.

what about a small "official" nicely java branded applet which is specified by default but can be overwritten with a custom backwards compatibility applet (like now)? This applet would pop up when available java version < specified version and link to the java download page.
