Has any work been done to improve standardising the Java applet tag?

Last I checked the had been depreciated but Sun still recommended using it.

Multiple hacks were need to get it working using the tag, where different hacks were need to get it working on different browsers.

Some info on the hacks needed for multi-browser support here http://ww2.cs.fsu.edu/~steele/XHTML/appletObject.html

Has anything changed/improved regarding this, any steps taken to have one tag that works everywhere?

thanks

I really don't know the "official" status but personally I still use the applet tag. The deployment toolkit at https://jdk6.dev.java.net/testDT.html is now the officially recommended way of generating your applet, object, or embed tag. There are still reasons however for writing the applet tag by hand, including to ease debugging and to achieve portability when JavaScript is not enabled. The applet tag is well supported by the Sun JVM or a Sun-derived JVM in almost all browsers (at least IE, Firefox and Safari).
