Java6 Update 10 rss contains this update:

"In b13, we introduce new Java system properties to support the usage of version download and Pack200 without any server side requirements. This addresses the issue that is raised in RFE 6378311. This increases the flexibility of deploying version download and Pack200 JARs without using JNLPDownloadServlet on web servers."

but RFE 6378311 doesn't contain any information about the new properties. Care to elaborate?

Does it still require the correct MIME types?

The new jnlp.packEnabled property requires no server-side support at all. For best efficiency you'll want to have .pack.gz versions of all of your jars on the server, because otherwise the JNLP client will make two connections to the server per jar.

Hi Gili,

You may want to check out the following document about the Version Download and Pack200 Support that talks about those new properties:

Thanks,
Ingrid

Thanks a lot for adding that feature - the complex nature of JNLP deployments which involved the whole server-side stuff always made me go crazy.
Its just hard to explain somebody that he needs an Servlet just for deploying a client-side webapp.

I hope Sun will "advertise" this feature a bit so that it will be used a lot.
Great that this has been solved :)
