JRE 6u4 and 6u5 with Firefox frozen when loading sample applets

After updating to JRE 6u4 or 6u5, Firefox hangs up every time when loading Java applets, even those sample applets from Sun. This happens on almost every Traditional Chinese Windows XP machines that we tested. Haven't Sun done any QC? A big problem!

Perhaps you have solved A problem of your own, but most probably not THE problem we were talking about.

If you are behind a firewall, you can't use direct connection. Checking that option will get you nowhere.

If you do not have a firewall, the default setting (using the browser's setting) and direct connection is just the same, unless you have specified a wrong setting in your browser.

Sun has confirmed what the problem is. See the link in my post above.

Hi, may I know whether this problem is solved? I encounter the problem every time I visit a local newspaper website. It just saddens me every time.

I'm now adopting the temporary solution: open the Java console before loading the page. But it's quite a nuisance!

Moreover, I found some flash website can't function "correctly". Like "Click to enter" doesn't enter the site after a click. Not sure if it is related to this problem.

This bug is fixed in 6u6, due to be released soon. As well as 6u10, the beta is available now, http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea/6u10/6u10beta.jsp.

Here is the bug report http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6648381

One addition to the work around you cited, you can update the console preference in the control panel, so the console is opened automatically before any applet is run in the browser.

Thank you,
Roger

Thanks, Roger. 6u6 is now available for download at the developer site. I tested it and found it solved the problems.

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

However, it has not yet been made available at the end user website www.java.com.

Yes, we also noticed the same problem for Traditional Chinese Windows Vista.

The fix is scheduled for 6u6

Hope this quality problem won't ever happen again. It started in 6u4 (January 2008) and affected all Windows OS of Asian locale. How could this big problem not identified during the QC process? No one in Sun bother to check it on a single Asian system?

Hi Petr,

Could you please confirm your network setting? Are your machines behind firewall or are you using any proxy servers?

Also, can you try the offline installer ('jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe') and see if this fixes the problem?

Thanks,
Roger Y.

We have tested both the offline installer from java.com and java.sun.com. Firefox 2 hangs up in both cases.

Yes, most of the machines we tested are behind an authenticating proxy. However, even when the machines are moved to a direct Internet connection, Firefox 2 still hangs up. I can in fact reproduce the problem at home. A Chinese Windows XP SP2 machine with a broadband connection, no firewall, just a simple router.

In fact, the offline installer jre-6u5-windows-i586-p-s.exe (and also the previous one jre-6u3-windows-i586-p-s.exe) from java.com can't even install successfully behind our firewall. It tries to download an MST file and for some reasons the download failed and the installation just failed. This is a separate issue. Please see

that problem may be fxed by following the instructions below
1. go to java control panel
2. go to network settings
3. check direct connection

The steps you provided are totally unrelated to the issue and certainly cannot fix the problem. Just wait for 6u6.

Hi,
I come from Taipei, Taiwan.
Not only Win XP SP2 but also Win 2000 Pro SP4 & Win Vista Business have the same bug.

Firefox: 2.0.0.12
JRE: 6u4 & 6u5 offline installer
Test URL: Java offical verify Installation page (http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1)

BTW, the OS are both Traditional Chinese.

Thanks.

Thanks. I can see it today, finally.

Interesting. It also said Japanese Windows XP. That means someone else in Japan reported the same problem?

Pter,

Thank you for letting us know about this. We actively are looking into this.

Are you seeing this problem on IE6, IE7 and Firefox?

Thank you again,
Roger

Only Firefox. IE6/7 are OK.

Hi pter,

Could you please provide the following information:
- Firefox version
- Which Java applet (please provide the URI as well)
- Is it only reproducible on Traditional Chinese Windows XP? How about English XP?
- Any detail steps in reproducing the issue will be helpful.

Thanks,
Roger Y.

tested on 2.0.0.12, 2.0.0.11, 2.0.0.8 and 2.0.0.6

Any. Including the verification applet at java.com and the demo applets at
http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.5.0/demos/plugin/applets.html

> - Is it only reproducible on Traditional Chinese

Traditional Chinese Windows XP
English Windows Vista

All Traditional Chinese Windows XP machines we tested have the same problem. The machines are from different brands and have different config. However, I am not sure it happens on all Traditional Chinese Windows XP in this world. I have heard reports that some people got no problems. We don't have many English XP machines for testing. For those English machines we tested so far, they are OK.

1. Download the offline installer of JRE 6u5 from java.sun.com (file name: jre-6u54-windows-i586-p.exe)
2. Install the file.
3. Try any applet.
4. Firefox hangs

This also happens for JRE 6u4.

The strange thing is, if you open the Java console before loading the applet, the applet can be launched successfully.

I am not noticing any of this behavior under English Windows Vista Business and Firefox 2.0.0.12 or IE8 beta.

Perhaps is has something to do with the Chinese version of the JRE?
