Hello :)

I see there has been some recent JCP activity on MIDP 3.0. This is good news! I found a post [1] from the google IRT to PhoneME and MIDP 3.0 here that seems to indicate that PhoneME will support this... Interesting! Is this ongoing work? Is there source available that can be used? Can anyone elaborate on the relationship between PhoneME and MIDP 3.0?

TIA

Hi Hinkmond,

Any update to this? Specifically I'd like to see a general roadmap for PhoneME Advanced. I'd like to know where the project is headed and what new features are being worked on or considered...

Thanks!

Hi Ken,

In general, we will support MIDP 3.0 going forward, since as you know
MIDP 3.0 will define MIDP to run on CDC (without hiding CDC APIs), and
the phoneME Advanced project is the current development trunk of CDC
from Sun Microsystems.

So, at some point I would think there will be a dependent CDC spec. and
RI update change that will happen to reflect what would will be needed
by the MIDP 3.0 spec. (i.e. changes in the CDC spec. and RI to enable
MIDP on CDC (w/no API Hiding)).

At some point our official phoneME Advanced roadmap will be coming from
our Product Marketing Manager for Java ME CDC (Florian Tournier) whom I
cc'd. So, I cannot give you any details of the phoneME Advanced roadmap
until it officially comes from Florian.

Until then, I know there have been many requests for enhancements to
phoneME Advanced that have been queuing up:

- MIDP 3.0 compliance
- Bug fixes
- Update to match Java SE 1.5.0 subset spec. for CDC (add Generics,
Auto-boxing, NIO, for-each, etc.)
- Optimizations
- Etc.

Let me know if you or others out there can think of other items to put
in a future CDC release.

Thanks,

Hinkmond

Hinkmond,

Thanks for the detailed response. What I'm hearing from our customers and contributors is the desire for J2SE 1.5 support.

cheers

Thanks, Ken. This reinforces feedback we are hearing from other sources
saying the same thing.

Hi Ken,

I'm hoping we can have our official roadmap from Sun ready soon to
announce on this forum
to point out where we are going with phoneME and MIDP 3.0.

It's not official quite yet, but it is good to hear feedback from you
and anyone else who has opinions on what they'd like to see in the
future with the phoneME project in the open source.

Are there other people interested in seeing a MIDP 3.0 implementation
developed in the open, tracked by the phoneME project? Please let me
know and I will feed your input back to people inside Sun.

Thanks,

Hinkmond

Support of MIDP 3.0 is very important....especially when you consider that OHA's Android supports many MIDP 3.0 features.
