Burning

Hello,

I have a couple questions in regards to burning my test disc.

1. What is the difference between a BD-RE and a BD-RW?

2. Are there any players that we should avoid testing with a BD-R or RE or RW disc?

3. If we use Nero 7 or 8 what are the settings? Is it a UDF 2.5 disc?

4. Does the disc need to be singed and can we just use the Signing tool that comes with the book?

5. If we use the video that is also comes with the book do we need to do anything different then what is already there, ie: change a flag in the MPEG Streams?

6. If we use Sonic to create the playlist and the video do we need to then change the flag in the streams?

Thank you,

Scott

Joe -

There is a pre-build hdcookbook build under "Documents and files" section. Perhaps you could combine the two for running a verifier?

https://hdcookbook.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectDocumentList
2007_10_hdcookbook_disc_image_no_jar_bdjo.zip
hdcookbook build

It might be interesting to verify the image from the book for the audience, but from what I understand, Bill published quite a few corrections on it already (for example, signing is wrong).

Thanks,
Chihiro

Scott,

Did you burn it as UDF 2.50?

Hello Joe,

Yep, it shows UDF2.5 in the properties window.

Hello,

Is there any way to find out what the error code might be for the playback issue that is seen with the BD-P1000, or for that matter any other player. I ask because the Toshiba and Xbox players provided an error code and I would think the Samsung might be able to do the same?

Thank you,

Scott

Joe Rice

Afraid with the BD players, that's information that's difficult to
get. One usually has to create an on-screen debugging utility to
provide any feedback. (The PS3 does have error codes, however).

Do you have access to one of the BD format verifiers? Those will
provide a lot of clues about any disc formatting issues.

Thanks Joe. Unfortunately we do not have access to a verifier i guess we should look into that. I was hoping that we could get the BD-RE to work with the HD Cookbook build and then use that as a working example and start to trouble shoot our problem with our code based on that.

However, we can't even get the HD Cookbook disc to load to show us any problems on the screen.

Joe Rice

Gotcha. I'll see i we can verify the HDCookbook disc contents from the
book to see if there's anything funky there.

Well, there isn't an official BD-RW that I know of, so when folks say
BD-RW, they probably mean BD-RE.

I've heard that the early LG combo player may not support BD-R/RE
playback, but haven't verified that myself. We've had success with at
least a dozen models from different manufacturers.

If you're burning a collection of files (eg the BDMV and CERTIFICATE
directories), then yes, use UDF 2.50. Or you can burn a BD disc image
from the .img file that Blu-Print or Scenarist create.

Applications will need to be signed if they make calls that can only
be made from a signed application, like changing a title, accessing
the network, checking restricted system properties, writing to
persistent storage, etc.

I'll have to leave that to Bill. In general, that flag needs to be
adjusted only for playback on a retail PS3.

Yes. Or you can edit your project file with a text editor (close it
first!) and change CopyPermissionIndicator from 3 to 0. (That name is
from memory - it might be different, but similar). This needs to be
done before building. Set it back to 3 before creating a replication
master.

Cheers,
Joe

The streams on the DVD included with the book have the flag set the
wrong way. That's fixed in the disc image under the "Files" link
at https://hdcookbook.dev.java.net (on the right).

Cheers,

Bill

Hello Joe,

Would you be able to provide a list of players that you've tested that work with a BD-RE?

Scott

Joe Rice

Scott -

Here are the ones we use all the time. The only retail box we have in
house right now that doesn't seem to play BD-R/RE is a Sharp. I
haven't tried the LG BH100.

ArcSoft TotalMedia
Corel WinDVD
CyberLink PowerDVD
LG BH200
Panasonic DMP-BD10
Panasonic DMP-BD30
Pioneer BDP-HD1
Samsung BD-P1000
Samsung BD-P1200
Samsung BD-P1400
Sony BDP-S1
Sony BDP-S300
Sony PS3 (can require specific CPI settings)

I understand that other Pioneer, Sony, and Samsung models are fine as
well.

Cheers,
Joe

Wow thanks Joe!!

We burnt a disc of the cookbook code from the repository and it plays in PowerDVD but when we put it in BD-P1000 it says disc "The Disc cannot be played".

Have you seen this kind of situation before?

Thank you,

Scott

Joe Rice

Have you made sure and downloaded the latest firmware? There were
earlier firmwares which prevented BD-R/RE playback.

For the US at least, firmware can be downloaded here:

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDown.do?model_nm=BD-P1...

Just did it earlier today actually.
