Hey everyone,

Netblender and The DVDA would like to invite all interested parties to participate in a quick survey about Blu-ray disc and HD DVD, how you use them, and other related info.

You will find the survey listed on the DVDA Home Page, in the Left Column under the "Surveys" menu..

or go there directly:
http://www.dvda.org/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,428/

Thanks! Hope you have a moment to participate...

Hi Viral, everyone,

I hear you and understand. On a personal level, I have a pretty
high sensitivity to spam myself. I do want this forum to be mostly
a technical forum, and if unwanted messages ever become a problem I'll
(reluctantly) try to figure out how to set up some kind of moderation
scheme or something.

That said, I don't think Danny's message really qualifies as spam. He's
a part of the BD-J community - I first met him at a networking event that
we (Sun) sponsored out in L.A., I think about six or nine months ago. I
admit I haven't read the survey website - I'm in the back row of the BD-J
training we're co-sponsoring in Barcelona this week, so I'm off-line. However,
the message from Danny definitely isn't a non-targeted mass mailing; rather,
I'd call it an announcement of possible general interest to the community.

I do think it's important that a forum like this be open to a tasteful level
of such announcements. For example, I myself used this forum to announce
the Sun/Sony sponsored BD-J training, and some of the folks here heard about
it only through this channel. I guess there's a continuum than starts
with valuable announcements, then runs through advertising and then down to
the level of spam. One person's valuable announcement can be another person's
annoying spam. I think that BD-J in particular and the movie industry in
general (and the other industries that pick up Blu-ray and BD-J) might have
a higher proportion of commercial activity than might
appear to be the case in a more "pure" open-source world like you find
in the IT industry or the world of academic computer science.

I guess what I'd ask folks is to try to be reasonable on both sides. IMHO
this should be primarily a technical forum, but it should tolerate some
level of tasteful announcements that are directly relevant to this community.
If we start seeing stuff that's too far in the direction of marketing, I'll
try to tamp it down, and I'll try to keep Sun's announcements here to a
reasonable level.

In the meantime, please remember to buy many copies of the HD cookbook, so
you can MAKE MONEY FAST -- with each copy, I'll give you some pills so that
we can GROW, BD-J, GROW!!!!!! Just send your banking details to the
manager at the Bank of Nigeria to CLAIM YOUR JACKPOT.

Cheers,

Bill
