Simple suggestion for increasing the use of Java on the desktop
http://www.java.com/js/deployJava.js allows us to detect the client's JRE version with high precision.
Google Analytics reports which Flash version a client has with high detail but it does a poor job reporting Java versions.
Google could probably wrap http://www.java.com/js/deployJava.js into Analytics in under an hour and this would have a big positive impact for the Java community. The first step for getting developers to use Java for desktop applications is awareness. Currently the assumption is that 90% of clients have Flash installed but almost no clients have Java. Imagine would what happen if this figure turns out to be larger than expected?
Could someone from Sun's team get in touch with Google and make this happen?
