Control Panel icon missing on Vista x64

I have just installed Update N b06 on Vista x64 and the Java icon is no longer present in the Control Panel so adjustments to the settings cannot be made.

If I return to JSE 6 Update 3 then the icon reappears.

Anyone else experienced this or is there a solution?

Thanks for the report. I can reproduce the problem with the latest 6uN build and a bug is filed:

6649350: The Java Control Panel icon is not showing up in the Windows Control Panel on a Vista-64 machine

We are working on a fix for it.

Thanks. It's still happening in b10 but I think you are aware of that.

I am having the same problem. Vista Enterprise x64 with Java:
1.6 x32
1.6 x64
1.4 x64
1.5 x64

.. and no sign of Java control panel...

Is there any other way of accessing the Java Control Panel?

It should be available through bin/javacpl.exe (unless that is missing as well).

javacpl.exe does not exist with the 64-bit builds of Java6 installed under Vista x64. This has been true for every release of the Java6 JRE since u1.

As to the why... I have no idea.

The 32-bit builds will install javacpl.exe & register it to appear in the Control Panel, even under Vista x64.

On the up-side, the annoying Java updater is not installed, either. So it's not a total loss.

Note to Sun: Setting the java-tray app to autostart with Windows by default is a bad idea!! Most Windows machines have enough garbage auto-starting without adding more bloat!!

Not sure how to describe it in more details, there wasn't much I did (just installed). The only point of interest is this was installed on top of b07, with Reinstall option selected when prompted.

It is a known issue, please check bug#6626909. It shall be fixed in 6u4 and next build of 6uN release.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
