I'm tracking the latest "Update N" builds, and I've just installed build 6 over build 4, but the files in C:\Windows\System32 (java.exe, javaw.exe, javaws.exe and javacpl.cpl) were not updated (they're still from build 4).

If I installed b06 over b04 (which the installed did detect), there should be no traces of b04 left.

The older 6uN early access builds needs to be removed before installing a new 6uN build. Please uninstall b04 before you install b06.

In your case, you might want to remove both b06 & b04 and reinstall b06 to make sure you have a correct install.

Is this by design? I consider it to be a bug, upgrading the JDK should upgrade the JVM too.

Yes. If a public JRE is already installed, installing a newer version of JDK with private JRE will not update public JRE version so that you can still use beta or early access versions of JDK for development without interfering your JRE environment.

Glad to know, thanks for the explanation. Couldn't the installer inform this situation to the user, so that the user has the option to uninstall the JRE first, so that it'll be upgraded?
