on xorg I found:
"The input & video driver API/ABI's are not compatible with X server
version 1.3."
the version of xserver on newest ubuntu is xserver 1.4 (Xorg 7.3).
this may be the case.

i will confirm after I recompile lg3d-x11 from source.

I've found something else to try:

After the package is installed can you edit /usr/share/bin/lg3d-app
and comment out line 106, so it should read:
# unset XAUTHORITY;

Can you test and see if that works? I haven't had a chance to test
that change yet as I'm not at home.

A bit more explanation of my searches as follows:

I've been looking into this further, but still haven't found the cause
- the setuid reference was not an issue - in actually fact I get that
when my normal gnome desktop starts up. The continuation of the logs
that I get (only when X11 fails to start - which is what happens for
me every time) is the following:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server

Xlib: No protocol specified

Exception in thread "LG-splashstarter" java.lang.InternalError: Can't
connect to X11 window server using ':0' as the value of the DISPLAY
variable.

Playing around just running lg3d-app manually it displays the following error:

+ '[' 1 '!=' 1 ']'
+ '[' linux == solaris ']'
+ export DISPLAY=:0
+ DISPLAY=:0
+ '[' linux == linux ']'
+ '[' -x /usr/bin/xhost ']'
+ /usr/bin/xhost +
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

/usr/bin/xhost: unable to open display ":0"

Looking through lg3d-app I found the following reference:
# lg3d-app can only be run from within a gdm/kdm session if
# this env var is unset
unset XAUTHORITY;

Trying this out from within gnome it starts up lg3d in app mode for
me. I haven't tried from the gdm session (I'm not at home at the
moment, so it doesn't run properly on this machine anyway).

I can't see any errors in there, however it looks like you are running
on Ubuntu? There are issues with it that I fixed just yesterday (I'm
posting from it at the moment in Ubuntu Gutsy)

There are more details here:
http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=256395

If you can try out the new .deb I've uploaded and see if that works -
you'll need to remove the old lg3d packages (dpkg --purge lg3d-core
lg3d-jdk lg3d-java3d).

If you are running on Feisty or any version still running java6 build
0 that package won't work, I found out today... but I can build a new
one (not today) that should be working.

Thanks,

KIrk

Hi Kirk,

mode it work fine,but when I start lg3d-app xterm (and all X11 apps)
doesn't receive any keyboard input.

did you have an idea what can case this?

I use java version "1.6.0_03"

I was seeing this when it wasn't finding the XKeysym method, I had a
similar issue also with the 1.0 release, that wasn't stopping it
running, but the X11 input was working. Are you receiving any errors
(it may be to standard out rather than /var/tmp/lgserver.log)? If you
are can you add in something like this to
src/classes/sun/awt/LgXWindow.java around the part when it is finding
the convertXKeysym method and see what the output is:

for (Method m: clazz.getMethods())
{
System.out.println(String.valueOf(m));
}

The java version you are running is the same as mine - just not the 64
bit version, so I'm assuming it is still right, but can you confirm
the method description for the convertKeysym(long,int) method? Also
just check that it is the updated version from the CVS head - it
should be using reflection now to load that method, rather than
accessing it directly.

I'm not in front of my machine at the moment, so I'll check that it
still works for me with that last change I made to the LgXWindow.

Hi Kirk,

the methode is correctly founded:

public static char sun.awt.X11.XKeysym.convertKeysym(long,int)

normaly LgXWindow should not affect X11 Apps, because the keyboard
events are not send back to LG when LowLevelX11Picker detect a hit
over X11 App Window. LgXWindow is active if a Frame3D should receive a
keyboard events.

I think the Xvfb version on 64 doesn't work correctly. as mouse events
are correctly delivered back to X11 Apps and also LowLevelX11Picker
delivered the keyboard events back to Xvfb.

HI Amir,

I have given it a quick try at work and I'm seeing similar problems
(running under feisty and java 1.6.0-b105). Input into the X11 apps is
giving me ~ instead of the actual characters. So you might be right
about it being an issue with the 64bit version. Do you feel like
recompiling the xserver for 64bit and see if that helps?

In terms of the LgXWindows - the input the Frame3D etc comes from the
standard AWT events doesn't it? So I thought that the LgXWindow code
was for handling the X11 window inputs? But you would know this better
than me as I haven't had as much to do with the X11 side.

Yes, but LgXWindows is used to (as I remember, may be not) to
translate the key inputs. there was an issue with frensh inputs.

X11 windows inputs are never redirect to DS server after detecting a
hit over a X11 window.

normaly our Xserver redirect the input to DS bevor XServer handle the
input. DS decide if this input should come back to LG or not.

So Mr. Kirk are you still working on the re-build of lg3d-core to work with gutsy coz I am looking forward to play around with this on my gutsy. Please post it as soon as possible.

Kirk Turner

I'm still working on fixing up the head, but I was having a play
around and got lg3d working on gutsy this morning, from the 1.0
release version. I should have realised this earlier, because I've
seen both the problems before, but it wasn't working was for two
reasons (that gutsy introduced):
1. /bin/sh -> /bin/dash - dash is a posix compliant shell... but our
shell scripts are really bash scripts so the /bin/sh is wrong.
2. /bin/arch doesn't exist anymore.

So to work around the problems in gutsy do the following:

1. Set up /bin/sh to be a link to bash instead of dash

sudo rm /bin/sh
sudo ln -s /bin/bash /bin/sh

2. Create a script to return the architecture from uname -m instead.
Edit /bin/arch and add the following lines:

#!/bin/bash
uname -m

Make /bin/arch executable:

chmod u+x /bin/arch

After doing that you can test if lg3d-app mode runs by running
/usr/share/lg3d/bin/lg3d-app, it should come up and work as expected.
Then you might need to rerun /usr/share/lg3d/bin/add-lg-to-gdm

Then you can log out and start a lg3d-session.

I'm hoping someone is still listening out there.

Kirk, I tried the change you suggested to comment out the unset xsession.

When trying to run app mode I get the following message:

ERROR:
Cannot find Xserver executable: .
Either the environment variable LGX11HOME is not set properly
or lg3d-core was not built properly with X11 support.
For instructions on how to build lg3d-core with X11 support
refer to the Project Looking Glass Developers Guide.

I have gotten the dev mode to work in Ubuntu Gutsy. I did see mention of a problem involving the setuid in the postinstall bash script. Is there any validity to this.

Thanks for your help!

Ahh I forgot to mention that here - when looking into some other
related problems on another thread
(http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=33582&tstart=0) I
found that all the changes to lg3d that were made for wonderland were
happening in the CVS HEAD instead of in the wonderland branch.
Basically, after talking to Paul (Byrne) I said I would rebuild lg3d
from the 1.0 release and bring in whatever changes are needed, and
apply the fixes to let it work with gutsy, but once the wonderand 0.3
release was done. wonderland CVS HEAD is open again, so I'll ping
Paul, but I should be able to start on this soon.

I will also try and do a new deb build from the 1.0 release that
should fix the issues.

It looks like you are running Gutsy? Gutsy seems to have removed /bin/arch.
I'm guessing you're using the 1.0 release build - if so you'll need to
manually edit the the postinstall, otherwise I've just committed a fix
for it.

Anyway to manually fix it edit
/usr/share/lg3d/bin/postinstall and on line 11 (after
ARCH=`/bin/arch`) add the following:

if [ "$ARCH" == "" ]; then
ARCH=`uname -m`
fi

Then run postinstall again and it should setup LG3D so you can run it
as your display server.

Kirk Turner

> since u just committed a fix wher ecan i grab the latest version, the one you just fixed?
You can check out the CVS and build it yourself if you like
(https://lg3d.dev.java.net/lg3d-developers-guide.html is a good guide
to doing this).

However, the daily builds haven't been running since February (this
was done by a machine at Sun), so they aren't available - but there
haven't been many changes since then either.

> ok so i edited and gogt it to work and it created the session. But i have the same problem, when i try to logg into the session i get this error sayign it only lasted ten seconds then i look at the detaisl and it gives some gtk warning....

Can you post the information from ~/.xsession-errors - this file is
generated on the failure.
I haven't tried it under gutsy - I'll have to try tonight when I'm
home, and I'll see if I can see why it is failing.

Ahh that makes sense - I remember seeing something on the ubuntu devel
mailing list relating to setui permissions. The postinstall script
sets it to be setuid. You can try disabling it and see if it works -
I'm not if the reason it is set to be setuid is for the gdm
integration:

chmod u-s /usr/share/lg3d/lib/linux-/lg3d-x11/programs/Xserver/Xorg

I've been playing around a little with this today - it looks like
there are more problems than I thought. I'll see what I can do about
it, and I'll post a new deb package for you to use hopefully tonight.

great, thank you very much, will be looking forward to this deb

I've built a new build of the lg3d-core debian package. This installs
successfully for me on Ubuntu Gutsy - however starting lg3d from gdm
isn't working I'm still trying to find out what the issue is with
this, but if you want to play around with lg3d-dev mode (there is no
X11 integration, but you can have a look at the desktop) then you can
install the package.

You can download the package from here:
https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/files/documents/1834/74353/lg3d-core_1.0....

lg3d-dev is in /usr/share/lg3d/bin/lg3d-dev
