large java heap size

The maximum java heap for most operating systems is '-Xmx 2048M' (2g) but most machines have physical support for 4GB,8GB,16GB of RAM.

What hardware/OS combination supports values greater than this?

I've read that you need solaris with the '-d64 -Xmx 4g' options but is that for 64-bit sparc or x86? Also, could you run solaris under VMWare Fusion on x86 64-bit and get the same large java heap size results?

For example, run solaris x86 under Fusion on Intel MacPro 64 Quad-Core with 8GB physical memory then 'java -d64 -Xms 3g -Xmx 5g', could it work?

Thanks

To simplify this question:

Do I need to run solaris on sun hardware in order to allocate more than 2GB to the java virtual machine?

Thanks
