Immediate Midlet failure on V3 RAZR

12 replies [Last post]
Anonymous

Hi all,

I am having a problem where a game Midlet crashes /immediately/ upon
load when run on a particular V3 RAZR handset with an uninformative
"Application Error". The exact same Midlet build runs well on a wide
variety of other handsets including Motorolas. Earlier builds of the app
have run successfully on other RAZR handsets .

I have 2 potential explanations - is anyone able to confirm/deny either
that:

1. Some V3 RAZR models do not like classes that have been obfuscated
into the default package (ie have no package)?

2. Some V3 RAZR's cannot handle Midlets 270K in size and indicate this
by crashing at startup.

..or suggest another peculiarity of this handset that could account for
the crash?

(Precisely which version V3 Im not sure as its a beta testers handset)

Such a quick failure definitely points toward either a jad/manifest problem,
or a perverification failure.

If it isn't a cldc1.0/1.1 issue, or illegal jad/manifest entry perhaps it is
missing an API method?
e.g.
Vector.copyInto(...) doesn't exist on the SamsungA620.

Seems unlikely, given the razr's similarity to all the other Moto's.... but
you never know..

Is this just a plain midp2 build? no moto fun lights, or vodafone api usage?

If you have a version of the application that has a smaller than 270k then i would suggest trying this on the phone first. This is probably your simplest way to fix the problem and for the V3 a 270k jar size does seem a little large as i would expect a jar size of 200k or under for this handset. (unless you are talking about the V3X which may be able to handle the build depending on your application.)

Note that if you can't catch the error it's probably because the code is not even loading. If it is a 1.0 midlet then maybe you could check your api's (ie bluetooth, etc)

Daniel Rocha

Not sure about the Motorolas, but when this occurs in Nokia handsets,
the problem is one of the following:

1) Mismatch between Jad and Manifest attributes
2) Trying to load a class that's not implemented on the device. Example:
Trying to use JSR 172 Web Service soap-related classes in Series 40
handsets; they only support the XML parsing optional package and the
first attempt to load JAX-RPC classes throws Application Error.
3) Building the classes with Compiler Compliance set to greater than 1.4
in Eclipse.
4) Pre-verification problems due to obfuscation.

I suggest you try first checking the attributes, then if it doesn't
work, remove the obfuscation, if it doesn't work check for missing APIs
(or blocked APIs due to operator restrictions).

Is the RAZR V3 you tested a CLDC 1.0 or a CLDC 1.1 compatible device?
You could have this problem when running a CLDC 1.1 app on a 1.0 device.
There are at least one CLDC 1.0 model and some other CLDC 1.1 models of
RAZR V3's available.

Hi Ben,

Possible of memory issue? is the heap memory available for that phone
enough to run the application??
Just my 2 cents.

The observed behavior doesnt suggest a memory shortage: the failure is
immediate, within a split second, and before the splashscreen shows.

Ive also tested the app on other phones with the same size memory heap -
800kb.

The exact same Midlet build runs well on a wide variety of other
handsets including Motorolas - ie the same Jad/JAR files.

So I dont think its eg a mismatch between JAD and Manifest, unless
there's some attribute in particular you think v3's might be sensitive to?

It could be, try taking out some of the attributes to see if the
application will run
