For obvious reasons, the Mobile and Embedded sphere is overrun with
discussions about Samsung and Nokia and all the cool multi-media
applications which are being developed. This is fine, but where do I go
if I am looking for some discussion about getting into the embedded Java
field for more mundane purposes! I come from the Factory Automation
field and would love to investigate the usefulness of JavaME as a
cross-device platform for data communication!!! We have proprietary or
MS, don't know which is worse!!

Could someone point me in a direction?

JG,

The Mobile & Embedded Community (www.mobileandembedded.org) is probably one of the best places to start. The community hosts the Sun's open source implementations of the Java ME CLDC and CDC platforms as well as the experts who wrote the code. Despite the project names (phoneME Feature and phoneME Advanced) the code is not phone-specific and we are already seeing interest from the community in porting the code to non-phone platforms such as Sony Playstation and a Linux-based Internet radio.

This alias here (ME-Interest) is also probably a good place to ask questions although I'm afraid many people here come from a predominantly mobile-device background so getting answers on factory automation issues might be a bit more challenging. The IMP profile is certainly worth considering but I am not sure what its market penetration is at this point in time since I am not as involved in the industrial space.
