javahelp search not work with JRE 1.6

7 replies [Last post]

Hi,

I got same exception when I upgrade my JRE to 1.6_01 for full text
search:
Exception while creating engine named
com.sun.java.help.search.DefaultSearchEngine for view:
javax.help.SearchView@1788551
java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

Did someone solve this problem or has a workaround? If not, what is the
bug id for this problem? I can't find it in bug database.

Any information will be appreciated!

Thanks,
Cindy

Well, that's great. I was so interested in this thread, just because I
used to having the same problem like yours. Before, we only keep and use
jhall.jar in our project, so no issues were found until we recently
replaced it with jh.jar, and at that point, I assumed there will be no
diffence in between. Obviousely, I did not fully test our build and
missed the part that we 're also using the indexer for building our doc.

To my understanding, if you were using jh.jar (jh2.0) instead of
jhall.jar, you will not be able to find and use JHIndexer that sun
provided as a tool for creating the index files. However, when you
distribute your product, only jh.jar is allowed to go along with. So
that 's fine if you only use it in the building process.

Correct me if I understand wrong.

Thanks,

-Sean

Sean,

That wasn't quite our problem. As you describe, we include jh.jar with
our product; we use Sun's jhindexer.jar to create the index files. The
build script was looking for a path to a local JavaHelp installation,
and another property in the script built on top of that path to find
jhindexer.jar. Since the first property was undefined, it failed to find
and run the indexer.

Having all of these files in our CVS system would have prevented the
problem :)

Cindy,

It was a problem on our end: on the branch, our build process was
missing a reference to the javahelp installation (jh2.0). Jhindexer,
therefore, was not being run, and the index files were not being created.

Hope the solution for you is a simple as it was for us. The Java
exception, however, was quite the red herring.

Hi, Brett

On JRE 1.6.0_01:
The problem only happened when I load my program from applet, search
works OK if I load my program from standalone application.

I did not try it on JRE1.5, but I think it depends on what version of
JRE1.5 you are using. In the following post,
http://forums.java.net/jive/message.jspa?messageID=208351#208351,
javahelp search on applet works on JRE1.5.0_06.

Tried to submit a bug to java bug database, my report has been assigned
an internal review ID of 955018, which is not visible on the Sun
Developer Network (SDN). No response so far.

Any workaround, please post it in this forum, thanks!
Cindy

Cindy,

This problem appears for us from our standalone application. Here are
the exact JRE versions I tried:

1.6.0
1.5.0_10
1.4.2_09

This is curious. I think it has something to do with our build process;
our trunk build is fine, but our branch build is producing the search
error. I'll write again when we figure it out.

Thanks,

Brett
