Hi All,

Although I have posted these issues and there are now bugs listed in the Sun bug database I am hoping to get some support in this forum to get this very important issue fixed so all the hard work on 1.6 gets recognized.

Several weeks ago a V.P. I knew was interested in seeing a new Desktop app deployed so it could be reviewed. We have the 1.4.2_05 deployed and it was advised to download the JRE 1.6 with all it's wonderfull features. No problem we thought with Web Start. Well Web Start would not download the Production Version of JRE 1.6 and a bug was filed and verified by Sun. Okay the engineering team said we will try using the Autodeploy recommendation from Sun for first time installs but testing also revieled Autodeploy was not setup for 1.6 and again bugs were found in the Sun bug database regarding need to get Autodeploy to work with 1.6.
This was for fortune 50 company. Seems if these issues were resolved quickly JRE 1.6 would be available to a greater audience rather than people downloading it by hand. For example Runequest a very popular game uses the jre and probably can be found on most PC's around the US. Think of what would happen if Web Start supported 1.6 downloads. That is one simple example of oppotunities for world-wide distribution.

So can we put a priority on getting Sun to to fix these bugs so we ALL can DISTRIBUTE 1.6 without asking people to download by hand or for Autodeploy to work for FIRST TIME deploys?

Thanks for reading.

Nothing to do with the autodeploy feature.
You can't at the moment download any JDK or JRE at all, looks like the download servers are messed up or something.

I did manage to get a JDK downloaded using Opera but only after I turned on our company proxy server (so it could just have pulled it from its cache, as downloading using IE without using a proxy failed after a timeout, with proxy it also works, normally no proxy is needed here).
The download servers can't be pinged, tracert on them also fails.

Thanks for the reply. Like you I suspected it was a server side issue not having anything to do with the JRE 1.6 release. If true then when it is fixed our user base should be able to download 1.6 if needed.
I am looking at a work around right now which would involve having a copy of the jre that users can get to via the jnlp. I remember haing read I could point the jnlp to another location. For the Autodeploy same issue where the cab is not available yet or is but under another name. I might look into seeing if I can create a cab or find one somewhere.

Wish things were easier just hope Sun gets it fixed ASAP. Especially since for me potentially millions of users will download the 1.6 jre.

Sun's been suffering relatively frequent outages of their download servers over the last several months.
Don't know what's going on, maybe they just can't handle the load with the flood of new updates and versions of things being released lately (not just Java, also OpenSolaris).
