Firstly; congratulation to all of you at Sun. Open sourcing Java under GPL is a very important and bold move. Interesting time ahead.

Secondly; While browsing through the PhoneME Feature release I realized that the Jazelle-related code (src/vm/cpu/arm/jazelle), has been removed. Previously, ARM has refused to disclose any information about the Jazelle architecture/instruction set referring to some patent issue with Sun as the reason. With the open sourcing of Java I would have assmued this claim to be void. Can we expect this issue to be resolved between Sun and ARM so that the relevant code can be released?

Thanks! Yes, we expect to have some interesting times.

Regarding the Jazelle-related code, we consider this code to be "encumbered" and therefore we are unable to release it into open source. I don't know the exact nature of the encumbrances, such as whether they are related to patents or something else. Unfortunately, we don't have any estimate of when we might be able to release any of the Jazelle-related code.

For more information about encumbrances, please see the appropriate section in the Java Technology Open Source FAQ:

OK. Hope that you are able to sort out this issue with ARM. I'm not into the details but all that I know is that each time I have been confronting ARM with Jazelle they have been pointing at Sun as the direct reason for the non-disclosure.
