[JAI-IMAGEIO] Re: [Issue 92] windows packaged as a tar/gz/jar

Shouldn't the platform be PC+Windows XP? We already have .tar.gz for all the
Unix variants.

If a Zip file for Windows were available, I assume we would mimic the .tar.gz
structure hence:

jai_imageio-1_1/COPYRIGHT-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/DISTRIBUTIONREADME-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/ENTITLEMENT-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/LICENSE-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/clibwrapper_jiio.jar
jai_imageio-1_1/jai_imageio.jar
jai_imageio-1_1/clib_jiio.dll
jai_imageio-1_1/clib_jiio_sse2.dll
jai_imageio-1_1/clib_jiio_util.dll

I mean superfluous when considered in and of itself. If consistency with
JAVA_HOME is considered that is certainly not the case. We're happy to provide
whatever people prefer but also that we not have more than one CLASSPATH-style
download per platform (except perhaps on Windows).

I like this idea as well for that we can install both
32-bit and 64-bit .so's into the same directory.

Good point althought the "ext" is superfluous in this context. Probably
something like this would work

jai_imageio-1_1/*.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/*.jar
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/arch32/*.{dll,so}
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/arch64/*.{dll,so}

while having the least structure.

I don't think it is superfluous because I would value consistency with
the directory structure naming of the java home for each platform, which
was what I was going for dealing with deployment and certainly would be
important for people new to Java and JAI.

Just my opinion here it is not that big a deal, and thanks for a great
release!

But the dll's/shared libs need to be installed in the 'bin' directory
of the Java deployment, not the lib directory. Unless something has
changed...

We deploy them via webstart, so we don't need to worry about the
actual Java hierarchy.

That's a different issue. That is a question of the structure of a
.tar.gz/.tar.bz/.tar.bz2/.zip archive. Issue 92 is rather the fact that there
is no non-.exe archive type installer for Windows.

Currently all the .tar.gz Unix CLASSPATH archives are structured like this:

jai_imageio-1_1/
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/jai_imageio.jar
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/clibwrapper_jiio.jar
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/libclib_jiio.so
jai_imageio-1_1/COPYRIGHT-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/LICENSE-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/ENTITLEMENT-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/DISTRIBUTIONREADME-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/UNINSTALL-jai_imageio

I added a comment to that affect. It would not let me choose it
though since I am submitting form a OSX machine??? Very strange.

I think the proposed structure is missing some of the subdirectores
(like lib) to match the linux versions.

I don't see that.

You're right: I just caught that myself. I intended this:

jai_imageio-1_1/lib/clib_jiio.dll
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/clib_jiio_sse2.dll
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/clib_jiio_util.dll
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/clibwrapper_jiio.jar
jai_imageio-1_1/lib/jai_imageio.jar
jai_imageio-1_1/COPYRIGHT-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/DISTRIBUTIONREADME-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/ENTITLEMENT-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/LICENSE-jai_imageio.txt
jai_imageio-1_1/THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME-jai_imageio.txt
