Actually, it looks like Stuffit Expander can't deal with the linux
deployment zip files. I was able to open them with another expander.
Very weird first time I have EVER seen this.

Actually, there used to be deployments for Windows that were not EXE
files. I used it all of the time to update our deployments. This is
no longer possible. Something has changed.

Only in the daily or non-{alpha,beta} stable builds perhaps. AFAIK the only
Windows bundles ever distributed for milestones (alpha, beta,rc,fcs) were the
.exe installers for CLASSPATH, JDK, and JRE, and the auto-installer Zip
archive containing the signed jar file.

I checked the downloads from the old Sun imageio tools download page.

The linux had a classpath install that unarchived to the shared libs
and jars. This is no longer available - you only get an 'auto.bin'
file that it does not work the same.

As you stated the windows only has a exe files.

Isn't there someway to just package a jar for custom deployments
(that are deployed in full, or possibly not installing the native
wrappers as that has lead to system crashes in the past).

What about?:

http://download.java.net/media/jai-imageio/builds/release/1.1/jai_imagei...

Could be done but has not been. Please file an issue on this and we can look
into it. Had this been done sooner such a packaging might be available now.

You are correct about the tar.gz... don't know how I missed it. Thanks.

i would have filed it sooner, I just assumed the packaging would
match the daily builds and release candidates and/or match the linux
releases - not sure why Windows does not have the same facilities).

De nada.

We don't presently have a means to automate generation of the Windows .exe
installers which are created for milestone builds. Therefore we just create
Zip archives for everything. Also, people interested in the milestone builds
are not necessarily interested in the daily builds.

Go ahead and file the issue. It may be that the result could be added to the
1.1-fcs site.

Actually, all of the zip deploys look incorrect. On linux they are
corrupt - no size.

We verified that all the jai-imageio 1.1 download bundles are binary-identical

I think the Windows zip deployment is incorrect. It just packages the
exe file in a zip file. It needs to have the unpacked dlls & jars so
it can be deployed via webstart (for those people that don't have
access to a Windows machine).

It is correct I think. That's how it is supposed to be. The Zip contains a
special signed jar which contains a Manifest with extension-list and the JRE
installer. It is distinct from WebStart. Compare the 1.0_01 bundle ...
