Open Source as a means to Open Standards

I believe that open source software projects can be a pragmatic way to flesh out standards in an open forum with real working code on a mission to solve real-world problems. It's not a novel idea, but I think it is pretty exciting and interesting to watch, particularly in the SOA space. Some projects are implementing open standards that are being developed in parallel, for example the Apache Incubator's Tuscany project and SCA and Apache Incubator's Qpid and AMQP. I did a quick search with Google and found that the Jabber community also started in a similar way in this article.
