CentOS has gcj version of "java" command, which conflicts with the JDK. You can do this to install JDK6 into alternatives system for "java":

alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/default/bin/java 1600 --slave /usr/bin/rmiregistry rmiregistry /usr/java/default/bin/rmiregistry --initscript jexec
Then you can switch between gcj and JDK using
alternatives --config java
Enjoy ;)
