The SOA "Trough of Disillusionment"
There is a lot of negative SOA press these days so one has to question if we have reached Gartner's 'trough of disillusionment' in the technology hype cycle. I don't think so because SOA is far from "unfashionable". But, we are seeing some high profile complaints and even outright failures.
The failures are no surprise to me. To get value from SOA, the effort must be business focused. Many IT shops have historically done a poor job of aligning the IT strategy and portfolio with the business. IT organizations with no long-range systems plan, no portfolio management and often no PMO are now attempting SOA, which is more complex in business and technical terms.
