My guess is you are picking up a Type 1 font.
Luxi or similar. You'd be better off with a TrueType
font. You should check what fontconfig on your system
is mapping 'sans' to.
there's a bug 6436899 Type1 hinting: Luxi Sans 13 pt look bad. It specifically mentions 'e'.

I think we did see this on something like Fedora Core 4 or 5. I don't know why FC5 isn't selecting the better
looking Bitstream TrueType fonts which seems to be
more usual.

Thanks, and how would I go about changeing the mapping of the font ?

Found a solution,
if in gnome go to System->Preferences->Fonts and map all Sans to Bitstream Vera Sans :)
