I haven't run lg3d compiled from cvs yet on ubuntu. I think there's something I'm missing.... when I launch lg3d-app I get this output:

ls: /usr/java/jdk1.6.0: No such file or directory

Starting up Project Looking Glass...

Log file : /var/tmp/lgserver.log
LG3D Dir : /home/raffo/projects/lg3d-core/src/devscripts/../..
X Server Version : dev-0-9-0-1
JAVA_HOME :
LGX11HOME : /home/raffo/projects/lg3d-core/src/devscripts/../.././build/current/debug/lib/linux-i686/lg3d-x11

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 1
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X1-lock
and start again.

/usr/bin/xhost: unable to open display ":0"

raffo@ganondorf:~/projects/lg3d-core/src/devscripts$

so, the first thing I see is that there's no JAVA_HOME set. If I'm not wrong I should edit my .bashrc file... In fact my .bashrc contains those lines:

JAVA_HOME=/usr/share/lg3d-jdk
PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

ANT_HOME=/usr/share/ant
PATH=$ANT_HOME/bin:$PATH

then I can't understand why I get this kind of error... an xserver is already running and It has to be running in order to launch lg3d-app...

I think we should write a troubleshooting section that has to be helpful (and so better than what we have now on the site)...

Weird

Please try running glxinfo and post the results.

Also please try and run one of the simple Java 3D examples, you can download them from the bottom of this page https://java3d.dev.java.net/binary-builds.html Try HelloUniverse and see if that starts.

Hi, I just tried out Java Looking Glass on a Ubuntu Edgy and I run into some of the problems posted above.

First I installed the ubuntu packages. Than I tried lg3d-dev, which worked fine, but with a glx-1.2 warning. This is surprising as I have installed the newest ati-driver and fglrxinfo shows me OpenGL 2.0 something, but glxinfo 1.2 for SGIs glx. Anyway, trying to start lg3d-app did not work, and showed me the /usr/bin/xhost not allowed warning. I solved this issue as follows:

"sudo /usr/bin/xhost local:"

Now lg3d-app runs fine too. Unfortunately I found no possibility jet, to have the access granted permanently for local.

Any suggestions how to do this?

Any suggestions how to make Java use the ati-OpenGL-Api and not the outdated SGI-version?

This is confusing. You're telling me that you are running X as display :0 but when you run xhost to :0 from within that X session xhost doesn't connect. How does anything run at all?

Try bringing up a GNOME terminal and typing echo $DISPLAY.
Is the result :0? If so why can't you xhost to your own X session?

Thank you for the reply Deron.
I didn't know how to check the display value and I was confused too about what's happening.
Typing "echo $DISPLAY" I found that I'm not using display :0 but display :1.0

This is strange and I'm not able to understand what changed the display value...

EDIT: I try to set the new value in the lg3d-app file... now I get a java version mismatch error... I'm gonna try to understand this error now..

In this case you need to edit lg3d-app and change these
two lines to the following:

USER_DISPLAY=":1"
LG_DISPLAY=":0"

Also, make sure you remove /tmp/.X0-lock if one exists.

I'm not sure how changing the display values in lg3d-app
can cause a different jvm to be used. There must be
something else going on.

Hi Deron

Why don't we directly use a "far" DISPLAY for lg3d (like LG_DISPLAY=":35") by
default? Today I had two X sessions opened (not too strange I think) and had
to go to the lg3d-app file just to change the LG_DISPLAY variable because :1
was already started...

I'm concerned about this message.In what desktop environment
are you running lg3d-app? GNOME? KDE?

Gnome, version 2.14.3.

Are you trying to run lg3d-app from a shell window within
GNOME, or from an ssh shell? Try doing the following commands in bash:

export DISPLAY=:0
/usr/bin/xhost +

What happens? Does it make a connection to the X server?

I'm trying to run lg3d-app from gnome terminal within GNOME... if I try "/usr/bin/xhost +" (after
export DISPLAY=:0) I get:

/usr/bin/xhost: unable to open display ":0"

What is the display number of your GNOME session?

I think it should be 0...

Does lg3d-dev work on your system ?

No. If I try to run it, I get no error message, but the dev mode doesn't start.

Now I'm not able to run the 0.8.1 version installed with the .deb package... I get the same error, so, there's something wrong with my OS...

Hi raffo,
have you tried doing "echo $JAVA_HOME" in the same terminal you are starting
lg3d from?
You can try to manually "export JAVA_HOME='path to jdk'" and "export
PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH" in that terminal if the echo gives an empty line.
Remember that this exports are only valid in the bash session you run it in
(if you close the terminal, you'll have to re-export it when you open the
terminal again).

If I type "echo $JAVA_HOME" I get:

/usr/share/lg3d-jdk

that is the right path.

I tried also manually with export before posting this topic (but I forgot to say it in my first post) and obviously lg3d-app reports the right JAVA_HOME value....

Have you tried removing the /tmp/.X1-lock file?

I agree. Is someone willing to help us about it?

Are you running lg3d-session or lg3d-app? Also, please post /var/tmp/lgserver.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log (if you are running session) or /var/log/Xvfb.1.log (if you are running app).

Shouldn't this be /var/log/Xorg.1.log?

Yes. Sorry about the mistake.
