First desktop cut on CVS

Hi all,
I've just returned from vacation and commited first cut for the desktop
plugin i've been developing. It's still incomplete but I hope you would give
me some feedback about what you like/dislike on it. There is one little trick
that is needed to make it work, you should edit the lg3d-core/build.xml file
to include the jar with the plugin to the classpath so it's available when
the plugin is loaded (I will probably file an issue on this soon). For now
you should edit that file and make it look like this (without text in
brackets of course):

[line 1310]
[line to add]
[line 1311]

This workaround only works when you use ant (or netbeans wich uses ant) to
call the "run-dev" target, so it won't work when called from the lg3d-dev
script. Once you get to load the plugin correctly you'll see one box in the
upper-left corner of the screen, you can click on it and it will grow to use
almost all the screen, there you can play around, and launch any program that
you have in the desktop (only .desktop based ones i.e.: direct acceses
created from kde/gnome).

Hope you don't find problems with it and please post your thoughts here.

It's far from complete, but as I'm back from holydays, i'll work hard to catch
up this week.

Regards

Hi back,
after some digging I found that the problem is that this icon theme is badly
built. As can be seen here[1] Size must be an integer, not the Scalable
string, and Type may be that Scalable string but not Scaled as it's in the
theme.

Anyway, my code shouldn't stop working because it finds an invalid icon theme
so, Can you send me the full theme zipped to help me find the debilities in
my code?

Thanks!

Hi Juan
I am attaching the Flat-Blue theme. Looking at the standards it does
seem broken

BTW, I now have doubts as to whether this is the source of the problem.
As I said before the desktop icons did not show up properly on Ubuntu
Dapper Drake either where the icon themes seem to be ok. but then the
lgserver log had JAI errors which I have attached.

Hi krishna,
I also believe that this is not the problem, in the current implementation a
not valid icon theme should just be ignored (i've done some changes to force
it even more), and also I've unzipped the theme in my icons folder and it's
ignored as it should (BTW, i'll probably roll back my last changes because
they fully disregard a theme that may have some correct folders).

About the jai problem, it was a typo from my side that I fixed yesterday, but
anyway it was only making some icons to not appear (if no icon was found for
a file handled using vanilla MIME detection).

Really, I have no clue. May there be some change on your local repository of
the core that might be related?

Regards and thanks for your support.

Hi Juan
I just gave this a try and doesnt seem to be working quite right for me yet.
It does seem to put the icons on the desktop but they are very small
every after I hover the mouse on it
I know the icons are there, since when I click on one of them I do see a
"cannot run netbeans..." message

I have attached an image. BTW, this happens on both fedora4 and
Ubuntu-dapper-drake

I dug some more and found this to be the source of the problem:

if(key.equals("Size")) {
try {

currentFolder.setSize(Integer.parseInt(value));
} catch(NumberFormatException ex) {
logger.info("Illegal number in integer
value");
}

at this point the "line" variable has "Size=Scalable" from the "index"
file "/usr/share/icons/Flat-Blue/index.theme" (i am attaching this file)

Hope this helps

(This message was written an hour ago, but for some reason I didn't send it
in :$)

Hi dwarfy,
thanks for trying it out, I forgot to remove some references to temporary
classes I'm working on that are not ready yet (and not in the repository). I
just resolved that issue, please, give it a try if you can.

Thanks.

Hey Juan !

It's working !

Nice to see my desktop icons in LG. Altough not everything is opening yet when I click (nothing in fact, but I suppose you have still some work to do..)

Good job !!!

Go on like that !

Here's a screenshot for those of you willing to see it:

Mathieu

ps:

I think it should be better to set an icon or something like that in place of the minimised desktop because as it is transparent, it is not much visible on the desktop when minimized... Or maybe an icon on the taskbar ?

:)

Sure there is a lot to do, but I think one of the priorities now is to get
MIME actions from the system as most of files in (my) desktop are regular
files, not .desktop ones.

You will make me blush ;)

Well, my first approach was to make it sensible to mousehover (but I
eventually switched to click based, who knows why), it stays almost
transparent in the upper-left corner (or whatever corner is preferred) and
when you move the mouse to the corner of the screen (after a little delay) it
grows to fullscreen and becomes more opaque. Then once you select an icon (or
move the mouse out the panel for a while) it shrinks to the corner again and
becomes transparent once again. What do you think?

Heya !

It's well http://dwarfy.bephp.com/lg3d/desktopplugin.png (I made a little mistake..)

Well It's better with mouseOver I think.
because It's not always easy to click on the panel when it's minimised...

What About adding a minimise icon like in the X11 integrated windows ? (In addition of the auto minimise after X seconds of inaction ...)

And what about making the 'mini' size configurable ? So that if peoples wanna always keep a mini desktop 'readable' (not so small) , I mean for example I would like to have it taking 1/4 of the screen size when minimised (but other peoples would maybe like it so small..)???

Cheers,

Hey Juan.

I just made a checkout and I can't run your desktop plugin.
Here is the output ..

Hi again !

I've triple checked, I've well added the line needed at the right place in the build.xml file.

I've tried a checkout via command line and via netbeans (because there are some troubles with netbeans to checkout lg3d-incubator).

And it still gives the same error.
...

Mathieu

Juan González

Well, the given line for the build.xml file is only needed for the runtime so
we can forget about it for now.
Can you please check if the
file /home/james/coding/lg3d/24072006/lg3d-incubator/src/classes/org/jdesktop/lg3d/apps/utils/freedesktop/DesktopPlugin.java
begins like this (ignoring comments):

[code]
package org.jdesktop.lg3d.apps.utils.freedesktop;

import org.jdesktop.lg3d.scenemanager.utils.SceneControl;
import org.jdesktop.lg3d.apps.utils.freedesktop.tabbed.TabbedDesktopPlugin;
import org.jdesktop.lg3d.scenemanager.utils.plugin.SceneManagerPlugin;
import org.jdesktop.lg3d.wg.Component3D;
import org.jdesktop.lg3d.wg.event.LgEventConnector;
import org.jdesktop.lg3d.wg.event.LgEventSource;

public class DesktopPlugin implements SceneManagerPlugin{
...
[/code]

Thanks again
