Hello to everyone,

I am glad to "announce" that I have the (unofficial still) permission from my university to submit the lg3d-incubator app that i've been developing (as part of my degree) over the past few months now.

I haven't been around the forum for about a month and from what I can see after "updating" my self with the forum, there is a lot of "craziness" :-) going on around the 0.8.0 release so this might not be a priority right now.

I'm not planning on submitting yet anyways, since there's still some work to be done and I have my final exams coming up.

However, I 'll post a few questions I have now, so that i can proceed with the submission faster once I find the time to do so:

1. I believe I am still an "Observer" to the project. Does this need to change in order for me to be able to submit?

2. How do I submit?!?!

Appart from my ignorance on this matter there are a few reasons that I believe would make this a bit less straightforward than usual:

2.1 The app is based on release 0.7.1 --> I guess i should spent sometime transfering it to the latest possible 0.8.0 release and accomodate any necessary changes first.

2.2 I have added a couple of new (edited some of the existing to be honest) shapes to the lg3d-core as well.
[I guess if that's a problem i can transfer them to the application's main folder instead.]

2.3 The app is heavily based on another open-source project called JAVAZOOM (http://www.javazoom.net/javalayer/javalayer.html) which itself needs some ".jar" files added to lg3d in order for the app to run. --> I am not sure if there are any legal issues in such cases. (where an lg3d project contains parts of another project).

2.4 Finally, the app is currently running by adding two .jar files to the lg3d-core\ext\app folder. If the app is going to be part of the lg3d-incubator project, shouldn't it be "embedded" and executable like the rest of the incubator apps?

If there are other things I should consider prior to submitting I'd be glad to hear them.

Many thanks

Does this issue solved yet?
Hi inectarios,

Does this issue solved yet?
From which directory did you run lg3d-dev.bat?
(I thought that it (used to) need to run in the src/devscript or the bin directory...)
I don't use Windows for development, so I couldn't compare the log with mine...

Ok. I just found out that there is no lgserver.log file in any of my checked out directories (i.e lg3d-core, lg3d-incubator nor lg3d-demo-apps). The one I had pasted before above was the one found in the /bin directory of the downloaded 0-8-1 release. Anyways, I have tried to "load" my incubator-app by copying its 2 .jar files into the ext/app directory of the downloaded 0-8-1 release.

The lgserver.log file reads:

NOTE: The above mCubeOne.jar file is my application's (perfectly working on 0-7-1 Release) jar as it was compiled and packed with the older jdk_1.5.0_06.

I know that the above are enough reasons for it NOT to be working under 0-8-1 but i'm stuck here so im giving out any information I can think of that can give you guys a hint of what could be happening here.

P.S When I try to "build" lg3d-trunk (checked out form CVS tag: rel_0-8-1) I still get this:

init-props:

setupLinuxx86:

Hi,
the errors seems to come from a malformed xml file, the .lgcfg i guess. Can
you post you mCube.lgcfg file to see if there is something missing.

This is an ant issue, you should double check that you are using the latest
ant (ie: `ant -version`). It would be also helpfull if you can post the
output from the command `ant -diagnostics`.

Here's my mCubeOne.lgcfg :

java org.jdesktop.lg3d.apps.mCubeOne.mCubeApplication mCubeOne ICON mCubeIcon1.png Utilities mCubeOne mCubeOne.jar

I am working under Windows. Can I execute those commands from Netbeans?

Also, I need to compile (separately) some file under lg3d-trunk and Netbeans gives me the following message:

"Script file nbproject/ide-file-targets.xml cannot be found."

I tried to copy an old "ide-file-targets.xml" file from an older lg3d-trunk (release 0-7-1) I had but gave some really weird behaviour.

Hi William,
notes below:

This commented xml is a reminiscence of the times when there was no start
menu, but it doesn't hurt as it's commented.

wops-> >   >    java org.jdesktop.lg3d.apps.mCubeOne.mCubeApplication >   >   >    mCubeOne >   >   >    ICON >   >   >    mCubeIcon1.png I'm not sure if this is an issue, but in all the others incubator projects there is a task in the build-*.xml file that copies the icon to a given folder (${classes.dir}/resources/images/icon) and then the lgcfg files use a resource like reference (ie:resource:///resources/images/icon/mCubeIcon.png). I suppose that you can try to keep the icon in the root of the jar file and substitute mCubeIcon1.png with resource:///mCubeIcon1.png and see if it helps. >   >   >    Utilities >   >   >    mCubeOne >     >   >     mCubeOne.jar >   >

What version of netbeans are you using? If it's >=5.0 then ant will be ok, for
4.1 I can't say.

Well, after some work (of about a week) I have managed to (almost) fully "upgrade" my incubator-app to version 0-8-1, quite a pain when you haven't worked on something for a long time and you can't even remember why you had made certain choices in your code in the past...

Anyways... I am only facing ONE last problem which I believe might not be an LG3D issue but I am posting it here in case someone has any idea of what might be causing this when I try to run my app:

28-Aug-2006 21:13:28 org.jdesktop.lg3d.utils.action.AppLaunchAction$1 run

... 6 more

Note: The mp3-playing part of my application is based on the javazoom project [www.javazoom.net] (thats from where this javazoom/jlgui/basicplayer/BasicPlayerListener comes from). The strange thing is that when I try to load my app with version 0-7-1 I DO NOT get the above errors.

Any ideas of what might have changed in 0-8-1 ?(Btw, when i "disable" the mp3-playing part of my app everything loads and works fine.)

P.S I am currently using the lg3d-incubator Clock application's folder and launch file org.jdesktop.lg3d.apps.clock.ClockContainer to start my application until I figure out a way to add my application to the Start menu like the rest of the lg3d-incubator apps.

I really dont know the fix to this - but I have also had this problem
once On WindowsXP+Netbeans when trying to checkout the lg3d-incubator tree.
The only workaround I found was to repeatedly keep checkingout/updating
the tree until it completes. This problem happened only for my initial
checkout and not for subsequent updates. I wonder if it has something to
do with the sheer volume/size of files....

As I have posted above I'm currently working on uploading my incubator app. After about two months of not touching it, it took me a while to make it work even with the old version i had it developed with! (0-7-1). Anyways... now I've managed to checkout lg3d-core and lg3d-demo-apps (release 0-8-1_rc2) [as a believe these are the most recent stable ones] but i keep having problems with lg3d-incubator, which in this case is the most critical one. Here's what i get in the output window:

I had too, that was starting showing in NetBeans 5. On older version
everything works fine. I haven't idea what is wrong.

I guess I'll give it a try with Netbeans 4.1

Hi inectarios,

Just wondering if the issue has solved yet...?

Hi !

I checked out lg3d-incubator with netbeans 5 yesterday and it failed, I had to redo it 3 times in order for it to complete.

I tried via the command line just after that and it worked perfectly ..

?

Maybe it is a netbeans bug?

Yeah, I also usually use the command line for the initial check out of the entire CVS tree.

Hello,

Well I've managed to check out lg3d-incubator rel_0-8-1 with Netbeans 4.1 but when I try to "build" the project (both in Netbeans 4.1 and 5.5 beta 2) I get the following:

Target `compile' does not exist in this project.
BUILD FAILED (total time: 0 seconds)

More than that, I get some weird behaviour from lg3d-demo-apps as well. When I try to "build" (through right-mouse-click and choose the appropriate option), I get the following:

init-props:
init:

If I edit any file in the project and press "F9" to compile it, it does it successfully. Moreover, when I run lg3d-trunk, it works fine with all lg3d-demo-apps loaded and running correctly.

Also, when I copy my application's .jar files to lg3d-core's directory, ext/app (rel_0-8-1) nothing appears when I run it. (unlike rel_0-7-1 in which this worked fine).

Hi inectarios

To build lg3d-demo-apps
and lg3d-incubator

simply build the lg3d-core (or lg3d-trunk) and the build script will build lg3d-demo-apps and lg3d-incubator for you (that's the only way to build theses.. (I think))

Thank you Mathieu.

What about this? Has something changed in version 0-8-1?

Hi,
have you included the .lgcfg file in the jar and in the MANIFEST?
You'll need to have the lgcfg file in the root of the jar and include the
line "Config-File: file.lgcfg" in the META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file. You can take
a look at the lg3d-incubator/build-scripts and lg3d-incubator/config folders
to see how others do.

Yes I have. (I have manually added the files to the .jar files through WinRAR - I'm not sure if this is totally correct).

My MANIFEST.MF file in META-INF (in my application's jar file) reads:

Manifest-Version: 1.0
Implementation-Title: mCubeOne
Config-File: mCubeOne.lgcfg
Created-By: 1.5.0_06 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
Main-Class: org.jdesktop.lg3d.apps.mCubeOne.mCubeApplication
Icon-Filename: mCubeIcon1.png

I have placed mCubeOne.lgcfg in the jar file. Don't know if this should go somewhere else though. Is this maybe the reason it's not working?

BTW. I am having a new problem now: When I try to Build or Run lg3d-trunk i get the following:
init-props:
setupSolarisx86:
setupLinuxx86:
setupLinuxx86_64:
setupWindows:
doesX11Exist:
setupPlatform:
E:\CURRENT_WORK\Release\0-8-1\lg3d-core\build.xml:121: Class org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.ConditionTask doesn't support the "else" attribute.
BUILD FAILED (total time: 0 seconds)

That's the right place for it

this is strange, I also have the else attribute and it works fine. But I don't
use windows so i'm not sure about how ant is deployed in it (while you are
probably using the netbeans one), what is sure is that it's an ant issue.

BTW, you get nothing in the logs? (i don't know where they are placed in
windows, but the file is called lgserver.log)

But I'm guessing the above results from the fact that LG is trying to run without being built. (This is a checked out version). I will try loading the downloadable version of LG3D into Netbeans. In the meantime any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

OK the downloadable version is not suitable for this so I'm a bit stuck. Help or any ideas are really needed. Thank you!

Hi inectarios,
glad to hear that you got to create your own app! I'm sure lg3d guys will be
very happy to hear that.

> 1. I believe I am still an "Observer" to the project. Does this need to

Yes, you should request a "Developer" role in the lg3d-incubator project, and
some admin will look at it (I believe you already sent you JCA).

> 2. How do I submit?!?!
Once you have your role set to "Developer" you can use CVS to commit your code
into the repository.

Surely just some little changes, but nothing very huge.

I see two ways for you to work this out:
- You can include your own shapes into your own directory and use them from
there.
- You can do the former, but also add a RFE (Request for Enhancement) in the
issue tracker and see if your changes are suitable for the core. If your
changes get integrated you should get rid of your very own shapes.

Just think if you shapes may be interesting to others, and take whatever way
you prefer.

Well, it will depend in the licencing conditions for those jars. If their
licences are GPL/BSD/similar they can be included, but look at their licences
and check there, as far as they are compatible with GPL they are welcome.

> 2.4 Finally, the app is currently running by adding two .jar files to the

Actually the incubator apps are built inside their own jars (one per app) and
loaded in a similar way, so it doesn't look like a problem.

Feel free to correct me.

PS: I'm not an project owner, so this are only my opinions/experience.

Great, new apps are always very welcome. Thanks for working on this and especially spending the time to convince your university to allow you to open source your work.

As you noticed we are in crunch mode for release 0.8.0 so this will be a quick post, we can discuss things in greater length after the release and JavaOne which is next week.

The first step is to read, sign and submit the JCA agreement found here https://lg3d.dev.java.net/contribute.html Once we have this you will be given developer access to the incubator CVS repository.

The next step will be to update your project to be compatible with 0.8.0. Hopefully you won't find too many issues.

We can discuss your changes to the core classes, if they will be useful for other users we will put them in core. If they are very specific to your app then they should probably go in your app name space.

We have a number of other projects (including the core) that are dependant on other jar libraries. I actually want to change the way these are deployed which we will do after JavaOne.

Welcome to the LG3D team...

Ups, I sent a duplicate answer by a couple of minutes ;)

Hello everyone,

I'm back after a while again. Here's what i get in the output window:

...
...
U lg3d-incubator/src/classes/org/jdesktop/lg3d/apps/bgmanager/Backgrounds/BspringSunrise/Bsprings-sunrise-3.jpg
U lg3d-incubator/src/classes/org/jdesktop/lg3d/apps/bgmanager/Backgrounds/BspringSunrise/LgBgConf.lgbg
U lg3d-incubator/src/classes/org/jdesktop/lg3d/apps/bgmanager/Backgrounds/BspringSunrise/thumb.jpg
Terminated with fatal signal 11
Core dumped; preserving /tmp/cvs-serv12897 on server.
CVS locks may need cleaning up.

Any ideas?

P.S I've tried checking out tag versions 0-8-1, and 0-8-1_rc1, they all give the same error.
