Klaus,

Thanks for filing this and jai-core issue #49. The product key for JAI-Image
I/O has always included the version string. As for JAI, in version 1.1.3-alpha
the product key was

HKLM\SOFTWARE\SUNW\Java Advanced Imaging

whereas in 1.1.3-beta it changed to, for the JRE version for example,

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Sun Microsystems, Inc.\Java Advanced Imaging 1.1.3-beta for JRE

I concur that the product key should not include the version. Therefore I
propose for both products to revert to the earlier product key style of

HKLM\SOFTWARE\SUNW\PRODUCT_NAME

where "PRODUCT_NAME" is either "Java Advanced Imaging" or "JAI ImageIO Tools".
This product key would them subsume a CurrentVersion with value being the
version string which could be used to locate the current bundles.

Also, with the current installer it is not possible to include alphabetic
characters in the version so for example 1.1-beta is not viable.

You don't: there isn't any, at least not yet ...

If this is of interest please file an issue in the jai-imageio-core project so
that people can vote on it.
